Thank you for the input. Uno will be a year old in September. He had been in the pen with the EEs for a few weeks and it was his first time with "girls" so I think he had dropped some weight. I like him and plan on keeping him to see how he turns out. I pulled him out as he was too much for the little EEs and put him in a bachelor's pad.

This cockerel has to be from my Blues. He is the one who was sparsely feathered a few weeks ago. Also had to put the Rumpless 3/4's Cuckoo LF Marans cockerel in it too He has the nice green sheen. A nice round pullet to use next season with him. And hopefully back to some of these old hens.

Nice. I have noticed with my blacks they all have a green sheen to them. I have also noticed if you get them in the right light you can almost see lacing in the feathers. The black cockerel looks like he has nice heavy bones & a good sized head. The pullet has a nice wide back. I can't tell much about her head though. These are just my newbie impressions of them. I am hoping to get a nice cockerel to keep this year. I am down to 2 to pick from so we will see.

Compared to some who like to know it all, you have a very refreshing and honest view of traditional Standard APA Orps. A good Black Orp should be electric green from head to toe. Not too many are that noticeably green. This cockerel has Akers, Bachelor, and Korfus plus a bit of who knows what in him. I am from the theory, one listens to those who are credible. I have had several APA judges or near as good an Orp breeder who thought I should use some of my BROWN/RED's sons. All of them are throwing nice broad birds. Most of my birds are not loosely feathered, so this boy is all bird. He is my leading contender so far..

Thanks. I too like one that is not extremely loosely feathered. The feathering will be something I work on to try to tighten up (if that is the correct term). I really want to see more hock than what some of mine have so I will be working on that too and hopefully the black cockerel I have will help with that. I think that is one of the reasons I like him. He is not great but I do like the height, visible hock and feathering on him. I also want a smaller comb than some I have seen but that will be one of the last things on my list to work on.
Boy! I have a long list and a long way to go but nothing worthwhile is easy in my experience.
Keep updating pics of him as I really would like to see how he turns out.

I also have at least 2 more of his brothers who like him are half bald rite now at the same age the Black was when he was bald. I will get a pic of one who just screams UK blood. It seems some of the traits in our UK birds seems to overwhelm the APA traits in my breeding of these Blues and Blacks. Just takes time. Jack Patterson is one of Doug's mentors and mine, said to me once: "I don't mind to see some lite under my bird". Both Jack and Doug are in our camp wanting more visible hocks. I may lean even more then them to liking a tighter feathered bird. I do not mind a little fluff, but rather have when someone looks at my birds to have no problem realizing that is all bird and not have to guess how big they really are.

He is a nice bird Davy. Nice long back. If you pair him up with a nice full rounded breast hen they should make some show worthy Orps. Hope you have some more like him to use.

Quick pic of Yosemitee. Now outta solitary confinement, he has been moved into the number one Black pens with the Korfus hens and Milkey's hen. Lets see how he does. This is a pic that sorta reminds me of Davy's nice cockerel he is selling. Another one with a long back

Thanks lildinkem i do not have any more like him. i am selling him because his eyes are a little to light for me plus he has a few feathers between his toes but he is still a good black orp.David I can tolerate a feather or two on the legs and feets IF the rest of the bird has some hard to make traits. I consider a longer back a trait worth trading off for. The lite eye thing is never desired. Some have told me if the center of the eye has some darker flecks or dots it is okay to use him. I have never used a lite eye bird. Even the line I made that has Buff Orp in them I do not use the lite eyed males and now hardly ever get lite eyes. Females it is okay to use if , again, their something special.

I am learning so much from others pics and posts. I need to get some good pics of my blacks. I an learning loads of stuff here and enjoy it a lot. I hope you get some good pics up soon. I am the worst photographer ever: heads cutoff, blurry, 1/2 a chicken, photo bombed, etc.

That sounds about right. I need to get my other computer up and running so I can use my good camera. The cell phone pics just don't do the birds justice.
