Hey lildinkem here is a pic of that black cockerel i snaped today.Let me know what you think. David I can not tell the eye color. Assuming that they are dark, I like his wide stance. I like they tail. It looks like it too is nice and wide. Comb is good. Looks to be in great condition. Only thing I would like to see more of a full rounded chest down low. Wouldn't we all? In 5 years of breeding Blacks I have only made one Black male which I would say does have the breast I like. He lost his comb to frost last fall. Not easy to make. Just have to breed numbers. Hatch out like 50 to 75 and you then need to raise them up. I have the two that I posted. the one I call Yosemitee is the best I made in the trait. You just need to be patient and you will make one that fills out like that. Patience is always rewarded with success. Davy he is as good as anyone else's Black males I have seen. Your the breeder. Unless you have any that you not showing us, use him. He looks good. Bill

this is Larry Bud. He is showing some promise. As many here know from one week to the next a young bird may go from looking good to lousy. Larry bud seems to be that type of boy. I posted his pics when he was a month or so younger. Took this one today. I was trying to take a pic of this Cuckoo which is split White to my Pontious line, daddy is the 13 lbs Cuckoo cockerel that has Shafer blood crossed with some Korfus blood and as many already know I have incorporated Akers Buff blood. However if I can point out the pullet to his left is from my Brown/Red Harold who was taken to one of his daughters. IF I like next season I can take her back to Harold to make more Brown/Reds. An ABA VP said on another site that Brown/Red variety is about one of the rarest of any breed throughout the poultry world. So, I may have to play around with Harold and this daughter of his. I like her type. She could use a bigger head. So, eventually I may take her to Larry bud to get a bigger head. Both these Blacks has my original Akers hens blood which has some dandy heads I can draw back too.

How old are they? I like the pullet in the first pic far left front but she is the one I can see the best! lol I only have 1 black pullet that hatched this year and 1 black cockerel but I don't think I am keeping him. If they are young give them some time. I think my pullet was hatched maybe sometime in April, not sure.

I can't remember. April or May hatch. Maybe April. I really need to keep better records. Everyone is molting so wings look funny to me. Not really sure what to think of the cockerels but the pullets look nice. I think they are in the awkward teenager phase right now.

Are these blacks out of the eggs you got to hatch? They look nice.

Yes these were the shipped eggs. I think I was expecting more size on them but they are only 4-5 months old so I know they are going to do a lot of changing still. They are as big as my year old blacks. The green has really come out on them in the last few weeks.

If they are as big as your 1 year old I would say these guys will be all right. You have to remember where we live, April and May babies don't do much growing. To hot.

I had thought about that. They have the genetics so hoping their off spring will just get better.

Ok.... I am watching my VERY young chicks already. Peering at them. Burning holes with my eyes thinking... which among you is close to perfect!! BUT what I am gathering is that I am not necessarily looking for close to perfect. Just looking for two or more birds with complimentary defects to balance out. This will relieve some self imposed pressure.... maybe. lol Now, questions!! I have one chick-- bottom of the beak black. Top of the beak... yellow! I assume auto cull? I have another chick whose beak is mottled?? Not fully black. I'm wondering if this will correct itself? Can this bird be used? Is it also an auto cull? And in regards to width-- is it possible to identify good width before they ever feather?

If they are chicks don't cull. The beak color will change to black in black chicks

I am still a newbie but everything I have seen is that you don't want to start even thinking about culling until about 6 months and even then from 6 months to a year they change so much. Sometimes it seems like the better the bird the longer they take to show it. I have a black cockerel that I thought was just the runtiest scrawny thing and he is turning into the best looking one I have. He took forever to get feathers on his backside.

Don't cull yet. Dark eyes, dark legs, looking good. Let the melanizers/genetics do their thing. Unfortunately that takes time.

I had a lot of chicks start out with light beaks but they gradually darkened. I asked a while back about blacks and was trying to tell if my blacks have red in them. I don't recall who told me to look at the feathers in the sun light (sorry) but I have and don't see any red. Here is the only black pullet I hatched this year. I like her but am not sure about her tail, it seems kind of round to me but maybe it will change as she gets a little older? I think she was hatched first of April.
