To me he looks good. His chest is fine with me. Is he a new English bird? He looks alot like my blacks. We have a problem with bantam orps being to big. My blacks has always been on the big side, but I have won some with them. Bantams mature a lot faster than standards at my place.

I like having the spots, and when picking females for my breeding pen I like some with peppering or smut in there tail. If you cull those females it won't be long and your buffs will be to light.

I just hope they get big enough for your county fair. You guys have early fairs. Pullets will work, males might be shakey.

Do you put them back with the hen after they hatch?

Those game hen are good mothers, it doesn't take them long to teach there young to roost in a tree.

AI is a nice tool in breeding poultry. It's not 100% good, if your male isn't fertile you won't get fertile eggs. I like to use younger males early and my eggs are pretty good. Sometimes older males don't good till it warms up. Not true with all old males, some will be good.

If they have spots on there heads they will probably have smutt or ticking in there tail. Good for keeping rich buff color. Not great for showing.

At our house, eggs have to come from Walmart or the grocery store. My wife says no to my eggs. I could eat them but she says no. My buffs lay very good if I don't over feed. Give them all they want and I get maybe one egg a week per female. Also if you keep a line or family for a long time they will lose some egg production. Carm my grandmother had buffs for years, she used then to set and raise chicks, she butchered the ones she didn't like. She met Leo Bowers at our county fair judging and after she visited with him she got eggs from him. I just wish I had some of those old girls today, Mr. Bowers and Dr. Clevenger was good friends and swapped males every fall. God didn't make a orpington on the lines of a cornish, different type meat birds. Orps do make good chicken and dumplings, fried might be rough. I guess you have to ask, would I like to have 3 chicks per week out of a good show hen or 6 out of a everyday old chicken. If you are showing it is not hard for me to chose. But I agree it would be better if they would lay better.

I have 10 females and 6 males, one male is going to Vern this week so 5 males. With the feed price as high as it is, I just try to keep the best ones and get rid of the rest. I have about 50 hatched now and I'm done. Might do one later hatch.

Cut feather don't grow back, molt will get them back. Plucking feathers will grow back in like 8 weeks. If you want to show early fall you might pluck.

I know if you are doing the 4-H deal you need early chicks. Those county fairs come early. Don't know where you live, but in western Oklahoma we have had the crappiest weather. 68 one day and the next 15 with 30mph wind. This don't help on fertile eggs. I have about 50 buff hatched and on hold now. If your close let me know and you can come get some if you get in a bind.
