I think if you was trying to make dressing fryers it would be better than a pure orp.

How's everyone's hatching coming along? I have around 100 hatched, to many stds for sure and could use a few more black orp bantams. I wonder sometimes if hatching real early is a good deal or not. I know it takes a lot more feed and having them inside for a lot longer. Where I live you have got to hatch early if you show in the fall. I guess it's whatever fits your program.

I don't ever feed that high of protein. I feed a baby chick starter which I think is 18 protein. I never change there feed. My breeder and everything eats chick starter. Terry Britt does that and it works for him, I tried it 2 or 3 years ago and it seems to work for me. This last year Irene sent me 5 chicks about 6 weeks old. They was hatched May 15, they was out of my females and her English guy Midus. I show the in Dec, at Shawnee and was big enough. They grew very good. Always before if you don't get them hatched in Jan or Feb you don't get them big enough. Our summers here in western Oklahoma is hot and you don't get much growth. I would think it would be cooler in the summer there.

I'm breeding a black split over my choc females this year. I should have some black splits males this year. If your buddy comes back to Shawnee next year I'll send you one.

I was feeding gamebird breeder which was 18& protein. I got some 16& layer and fed for like 2 weeks and then I got a bag of gamebird starter and fed it to all the birds, bantam and standard's both went into a molt. Then I went back to gamebird breeder. Our county fair in TN was the middle of August, older birds never looked very good. After coming out of breeding they looked rough. I tried this and got nice feathers for the fair. The only problem was they went into another molt in late Sept. on there own.

I use Calf Mana, seems to work ok. Milk would be animal protein and would be good for your birds.

You can force molt. I did that once for our county fair when we lived in TN. Worked great, birds won a lot because of the new feathers, Then about the middle of Sept, they did another molt and messed up fall showing early. Males and females both molt, usually about the same time. Your birds will molt in maybe late Aug on.

Great!! Glad you figured it out. We got up yesterday at 4 degrees and got up to 18deg in the afternoon. Those guys looked bundled up. I guess when you win it warms you up and you don't notice the cold.
