That a fact!! I just put one male to a pen. Did or do you have males in your barrel pens this winter?

Did you get your birds from a breeder or hatchery?

How many hens do you have and are they bred alike? If so I would put some with one male and some with the other guy. I toe mark all my chicks with my pen number. I have used wing bands before but I like the toe marks. 2 weeks isn't much age difference to me. They have to get older to do much culling. That is one problem with orps they are slow to develop. You can read on BYC and they claim if a pullet don't lay by 5 months they should be culled and not used as a good breeder. In my buff orps, laying isn't my main thing. I would like to show them and have good type and condition. You said your eggs wasn't fertile, have you trimmed of plucked any feathers around there vents?

I don't use a condition pen for my std birds. I have 4 X 4 pens with a 55 gal barrel for there house. There is pics on this board that soonerchick made. Mine has the barrels laying down. This is in western Oklahoma. Cam lives in Canada and that might not work for him. I know folks that use a 4X4 condition pens and they leave them in it full time. It's a job cleaning them. My bantams are in 2X2 pens and when they go in them, thats there home till they leave or go into breeding pens.

Carm Kyle emailed and ask to fill that job. I think he is the only member we have in that area of Canada. Thank you Carm for helping us out. I can't wait for him to tell about raising orps in Canada.

In my buffs, I don't notice any white until 2 or 3 years old. I haven't had a problem with young males. I would say after you pull the white feather they will come back in white. Never hurts to try. In my time with buffs, white in wing feather is common in older males. Females seem not to have a problem.

Warren had open heart operation on Dec. 30. I just talked to him on the phone and he is doing good. He's home and getting along. He is 88 years old and I guess you could say he's pretty tough. They had to put in a new valve. Some lady asked him if they used a chicken valve and his son told her they had to use a bull valve cause he was full of bull. Warren is a super guy and it wasn't for him our orp club would still be dead.

Fred, if you have a male you want to show, get a apple box at the store and put some wood chips in it. Put the rooster in the box for the night. I put mine in a building not heated but air tight. Heat in the box will keep comb from freezing. I don't know what you would do if it stayed super cold for a few days. Heat lamp I guess.

I think the only time a roosters comb might cause him not to be fertile is if it gets infected when trying to heal.
