I love my big old Buffs. My girls give me an egg each a day, rain or shine, cold or heat. Gotta love em. I pulled quite a few 83 gram eggs out of those nest boxes. Can you say OUCH! Wish I could those darn Marans to start laying! I was very fortunate to find two old Leahy incubators a while back. It took about six weeks to restore them but I swear by them. My barn has a concrete floor, no insulation, heat or air and those things never skip a beat. Here in the North in the valley we are at a 300ft elevation. Are temp's swing a lot. 22 in the winter and 112 in the summer. What's even worse is it can be 98 in the day and drop down to 50 at night. When I first bought the bators I would run out there every few hours with the strange weather fluctuations to see if I was having any problems. Now, I just close barn door and call good.

Does anyone have a sure fire way to get a hen to stop pulling the feathers out of my rooster's hackle. I have 9 hens in this pen and don't know which one is the culprit. My first rooster lost almost 80% of his hackle feathers and originally I thought it was mites or something. After treating him and the girls and the pen for mites, I've come to the conclusion that mites weren't the problem in the first place. I moved the original rooster out and replaced him with another. Within two days the new rooster had started to show missing feathers in the hackle. So it can't be mites. I also don't have any other birds (86) showing this problem. Someone on here said it was probably a feather eating hen and I am now convinced this is the problem. Someone else suggested hanging a ham hock in the pen, something to do with the salt, that may keep her off the rooster. Nope, only the flies are showing any interest in that darn ham hock. Any ideas? There was an exotic sale today and there was a real nice pair of Buff Orps. I did not attend since I am reluctant to buy any full grown birds due to the possibility of bringing some strange disease home. Plus these sales are generally culls for one reason or another. I had a beautiful very wide male blue Orp that I dumped this past fall and it appears he has made his way to several auction since a fellow said he bought this great blue wide male at a local auction and I was the only one selling these type of birds locally. He was culled for a reason.

We are getting a few buff chicks with stubs. Anyone else notice this in their hatches? Does anyone know of a particular bloodline which produces chicks with stubs? This is our maiden year of breeding Buff Orpington large fowl and are just curious if this is very prevelant in this variety. Thankyou for your responses.

The only bloodline I have had has been Clevengers and haven't ever had a stub did have a few in some bantams orps once. I didn't keep them, I bought them at a show and thought it might be nice to cross into the ones I had. I should have looked a little better. I did get 2 pair from Doug and they never had any either, I forgot those guys.

Sasquatch is a very young cockerel. Not even 6 months old.

Greenville OH Show was this weekend. Just Doug showed Orps aside from me. His Buffs are very nice! A big congrats for him and his birds. He also did well with his big White Rock cock winning BB. And did well with his 7 yr ole Sumatra hen which also made Chcampions row. Grand Champ was a near perfect Brown Leghorn. You would have to ask Doug who the breeder was of that bird. Here are a few pics of Doug's Champs. I shown one of Don's hens. She is now going on 4 years old. The Buff hen I shown 2 weeks ago went to being a decent condition to looking like she was run over by a Mack truck (Doug's cock I bought last year). Don's girl also went strait out of a breeding pen. And needs better conditioning, Champ English Res English

Congrats to the winners. Bill you come up with some unique names Sasquatch will prolly not be around too long here. I talked to Doug and he and I agreed that the traits that need work are too many and I have better to use in the future of my Buff program. So, so long Squatch. Still like the name. That maybe used again in the future here.
