Hadn't seen too many Buffs on our new site. Here are a few I have. And we definitely need some Buffs on this forum's board. I thought this thread would be a productive thread for ALL. ANY bashing of others birds will not be tolerated and I will ask for immediate removal of any distasteful opinions. Sad I have to tell other adults how to play nice. Now I do encourage those who see an area for improvement of my Buffs to speak their mind. Constructive criticism is not a bad thing. But lets leave personalities and tastes left to other forums. My original Buff hens, given to me for free from a former member, Doug's Buffs My best Buff cock. A Tony Ewert line. I was recommended to use this line on my original Buff hens by their breeder (Doug). I am glad I listened! Here are a few of the offspring. This Buff pullet did very well in our Central Indiana Poultry Show here in Lebanon IN. Champ English A little undersize but I like the color and will be using him with a couple of my biggest old hens Don Chandler Buff cock

Bill, buffs are sometimes hard to keep that rich buff color. My guy looks like he has gotten to light. I don't think he cost much did he. Bill called me in need of a buff male. I only had one that I wasn't using and he won champ large bird at our fall show in Newport, TN. I told him I didn't want to sell him but I would let him use him. We had bad luck and he died at Bill's. I had sent 4 young males to a older lady for dumplings, I went and got one and that is the guy. Funny story.

If I'm going to set big buff eggs I guess I'll have to get some from you. My 4 hens are not with the egg thing yet. I have had my lights on for a long time and I get 3 or 4 eggs a week. They might have joined the egg laying union.

The only Buff eggs I am getting are from my bottom tier birds. At best 2 eggs a day. Their not bad quality, but their not the best. IF I get you some Don I would like to get you some from this girl who did well at Central Indiana Poultry Show and her two sisters. Those three pullets should make some nice stout Buffs with any of my cocks/cockerels.

When you have bad luck you have it. If my girls ever get it together on laying I'll send you some eggs. Not the best in the land. We both might need to call Wild Bill.

I think hatching and raising the chicks is alot of fun. You get to watch them grow and you start picking what you think might your best and I'll change my mind several times. How alittle runt can grow and maybe be one of the best. You never know.

Hatching is an easy thing Jon. I just stuck in a couple of eggs on the 10th. just had one hatch. All I did is soak a decent size kitchen towel and fold it over a couple of times and set it to the side of the eggs. Did that once around day 7, and again 3 days ago. That is it. Looks like we here in Indy are going to dodge the bulk of the freezin rain. We're getting BB size sleet. Nothing good to drive in. But, way better then what they were predicting. So I am setting near 2 dozen eggs tonite. Mostly Blacks. I don't think the Buff cockerel has it down yet. Jon I am sorry to hear of your bad luck. Sometimes that happens for a purpose. I am sure I can help you out here sometime this spring.

I think its my incubator that is the problem im trying to get a better bator at the moment. It's not a "terrible towel", just a cloth one foot by one foot. I have those foam bators, and use the turbo fan with an auto turner. I set this cloth to the side of the aut turner, making sure it never touches the eggs. Most of my foam bators are the religious types, "Very Holy". lolol Pecked thru by wirey chicks who were able to reach out of their cages and eat some of the bators. And that is why I can not keep the reservoir filled. I am very loyal to what works. I usually have fairly high hatch rates with fertile eggs. This set up will get the humidity up to 65% for a few days then taper off till the last three days, where I keep it soaked. And again not exceeding the 65%. Not intentionally, I would not care if it was higher then 65%. But that works for me.
