Are these pics still a good baseline? Maybe a better question would be have the trends changed?

I'm just thinking now, but it never hurts to plan ahead. Are there any easy projects or crosses using Buffs, preferably buff hens in a project or cross so all I would need is a rooster. I think I have read using a barred rock on buffs can make a neat bird. I haven't read up on all the color genes yet. We are at least a year off on doing something.
A second question along the same lines, I could see myself buying a gold lace pair or jubelee's. How do these breed through? Is it like a recessive deal where you'd get %25 what you want %50 percent "x" and 25% "y" or a 50/50 or they're all colored similar to what you want just varying degrees there of.

Here are some chicks, just arrived from Don this morning.
And our "brooders" + Sasha the dog. The bigger chicks are ready to go outside. Thanks Don! A great finishing touch to our start.

Don brought up a good point, really getting down to what are your goals and what do you want to do. If your looking to show, you need to select towards show, If you want production, you need to breed to production. If you are fortunate enough to have a show winning hen who also lay six eggs a week, then good for you. Carm, you mentioned show cattle. So true. Show cattle, weather dairy or beef breeds are so off course of commercial and profitable production it's sickening. Of course showing cattle, you a chasing a trend not a SOP (although I'm guessing there are still trends in chickens). The most prolific winners can set the trend, when everyone catches up, the trend has already changed. Many a usefull herd as been wasted chasing the showring. Fortuneatly, the commercial cattleman doesn't give a flip whats' going on in the ring but is paying attention to production.
BTW, I am not bashing SOP showing or SOP chickens, I guess I got side tracked.
Back to my original question, Has anyone had success of selecting for show and laying or growth?

Am I not mistaken though, it takes two people to accomplish this. One to hold the bird and one to hold the scringe.

It happens in animal agriculture all the time. Even people. When healthy sperm reach healthy egg fertilization happens. Poor semen handling techniques will kill sperm resulting in non fertilization. For example in cattle, I use this because it's where I have the most experience, sunlight, temperature cleaning agents can all effect sperm. If you kill or weaken the sperm, you most likely won't get fertilization, not an unhealthy chick. As far as chickens and poultry go. it happen quite a bit in the commercial side. It is my understanding that in commercial turkeys, all breeding is done AI. The breast on the tom have gotten so big, his "other parts" can reach to do the job.
EDIT: This was my first response of actual knowledge, I apologize if I were "know it all"ish.

As some of you know, this forum is operated by "proboards.com" Sometimes you will see their add in the above add strip. There was recently an add to like them on facebook and you get free waterballoons to "throw at friends on board" - they also have thank yous and other positive badges where you can pass kudos to other forum members. Is anyone interested in doing this just for fun? Or is this forum kept matter of fact and just for business? I didn't want to PO someone by doing something fun.

It'd be a lot cooler in the summer I would think also, with better air movement.
