Here is a pic of a couple of January cockerels I got from Don. My question is : Is the bird in back comb too large? the area of the front spike is very long with a very short spike. It is still erect though, it hasn't started to lay over yet. Different pic of same bird. I really like him, although I think he could use more length down the back. At this point he is the widest of our young males. My youngest daughter may take him to the county fair mid July. Unfortunatly, she won't be in a competitive class.

How do you all transport (cage) your birds to the show. Weather, winter vs. summer?

I hatched about 30 out of my three hens. One went broody shortly after I started. We are done for now though, time to get busy with field work. The cold weather definitely set us back as we were learning. As this is our first time, didn't want to get more then we could manage.

back to chickens, Our first chick that we hatched out is now 5 weeks old. It now shows some pepper in its wings and a little in the tail. I was told a little pepper in the tail could make a good breeder to help with color but wouldn't show. 'Course this has pepper in the wings also. Will some grow out? too early to tell? I'm kind of concerned 'cause all of our chicks 15 so have have had various amount of black spots on head.

sorry to side track. There used to be bull snakes in this area, I have never seen one. I recall a story of my grandfather catching a rather large one and putting it down a rat hole. Cleaned out the rats. Now that would be a snake I could tolerate.

I have a book copyright 1921, that was a grand folks, maybe great grand folks. It was an extension publication courtesy the local bank. It suggests using milk as the protein source for layers, young chickens and for fattening/finishing. This was from a time when everyone had cows. For layers they would have used skim milk. A good way to market milk through the eggs! probably kept or sold the cream. I could see whole milk being used to fatten with the extra calories available. It did suggest staying with sour or sweet but don't go back and forth.
Interesting enough, an hour spent with that 70 page publication, yielded more useful information for a new chicken owner than 70 hours on BYC. LOL No offense to BYC

That's a neat find. I flipped through the pages and pictures last night but haven't started the read. Thanks for posting.

Since I'm asking lame questions: Do roosters molt also? Same time as hens? This had never croosed my mind before I reread my prior post.
Edit: OK, I guess I know roosters molt sometime.

Sorry for the newbie question here. My LF buffs were hatched last April. They hadn't been laying long when we got them Dec 27, but they were out of the "pullet" size eggs. Any idea on when they might molt. Our county fair is Mid July. It would be nice if they decided to molt mid May. Or would that be wishful thinking?
