I've got almost a dozen whites from the last few weeks, my last two went into LD today. Have about 10 of my American chocolates and hatching out my bantam lavenders for the past few weeks with a few more weeks to go. Will start working on blue and black starting sometime next month and buff when they finally decide to start laying again.

From my flock I have 3 Buffs from the male I bought from Doug at Greenville. One of the 3 is from a decent Buff hen I took to Connorsville who got RV to Doug's stand out Buff hen. I also have 2 from the mixed up BUSTOFF. They are either from a nice big Black hen or one of these 2 Duns I have in with him. They sorta have a Blue downy look. And with BUS you never know what will pop out. One of BUS's grand kids (Harold a Brown Red) has also became a daddy. And he is in with a grand daughter of Julie duo I got from her 2 years ago. Because of Harold being a Brown Red these 2 have a good chance of being Lemon Blues. And that Cochins heritage has creeped in and one has feathered shanks. lolol Also Doug has a lone single Buff chick due to hatch and I am in line to raise that one up. Doug does not like raising a chick by itself, so this little one will join the brooder box with these 2 Bluish BUSTOFF chicks. Should be a nice year. I am setting 14 eggs tonite as well. Hope everyone is having some fun!!!!

My first batch was like 50% good. I'm breeding a split choc boy on 3 pens of black pullets, there is 4 in a pen. He is always on the move and I knew I wouldn't do very good on this deal. I just don't have a big pen to put all the girls in. I have never done this before, can a male (young) handle 12 females?

Don,
I think it is better to have the hens split into 3 pens and rotate the male. If all were together, the male would have his favorites and not get to all of the hens. With your setup, he is more likely to get to all of the females.
I have 16 chicks out so far, with about 40 eggs in the hatcher due to hatch tomorrow. Lots more due to hatch in 2 weeks.

I got my first choc babies today, I have a split male over 12 black females, didn't have a very good fertile batch. I started saving eggs to fast, I guess the choc deal got me fired up. I also have choc babies out of choc mother and the split guy.

Sarah has been running the incubator since early December and we have as of February 6th 19 LF Buffs out. Next hatch is due March 5th. Fertility has been improving with each setting. Set another 21 eggs on February 26th. The chicks we have out so far are really healthy and growing well. Good, even buff color on their first feathers. We are very excited with what we are seeing! I have several blue and blacks LF out so far. Working on hatching more whites and the girls are slowing kicking up laying. I have hatched a few bantams. Fertility was spotty in the black & blue bantam pens, I switched the male up and hope to find out in the next few days with some eggs I gathered over the last week.........Still waiting on my buff LF to start laying.

I have thrown away lots of unfertile eggs and had others with problems ,but finally have about 60 chicks mainly Lf Buff and DominiqueLF. I now am getting a higher percentage of good eggs and strong chicks. Christina, I have 4 Black lf chicks and 5 good eggs in hatcher for Sunday. It won't be long until I quit setting eggs except special matings, ducks and Turkeys. Fred
