I have hatched about 14 chicks. I am so cockerel heavy in these hatchings. I don't think I hatched one blue pullet. All the pullets I hatched are black. I really can't hatch anymore till fall due to travel. Its okay though. I will do me hatching then and have a short break from my little chickies

I finally sat some eggs and got my first hatch off this weekend. It was a small hatch of only 30+ chicks of various breeds. 2 Araucanas, 7 black Orpingtons, 21 Ameraucanas black and lavenders. Even though I trimmed all my birds fertility was not up to par other than the Ameraucanas at this time. I have been setting all the black Orp eggs that have been layed but soon my incubator will only be black orp eggs since they lay almost every day. Julie, your and Joy's line are very good egg producers and may rival the production strains. I am very happy with their production results. Good luck everyone with your hatchings.

Harry I have thought they were good layers too for the most part I am getting over a doz eggs a day from the few girls I have..
As it has turned out I do have one blue pullet in the first group of seven chicks I hatched in Jan and four black pullets so maybe not as cockerel heavey as first believed. I have one blue pullet in the next seven too. But only two pullets in that group. I guess it evens out in the end.

I have hatched 4 groups of new babies. I have 25 to 30 chocolate bantams and about 85 std buffs. I have just started saving pure black orp bantams, I got a new black guy from Warren and I can't wait to get babies out of him. I know I'm not going to hatch any more stds for myself. That many will beak the bank.

Way to go Don! I have 5 LF Buff chicks out. And one is what Doug hatched out. He did not want to raise her by herself. All are about a month or so old. I have been having great laying these past two weeks. The pen of LF Blacks that I have 4 Korfus hens and one Bamma 75%er Splash hen gave me 3 eggs today. I FINALLY hatched some outta my White project pen. I have 3 hatching today. Got one big nice Buff Sport cock which is in with a couple of Black hens to see what would come out. They hatch out Black which is what I am hoping for with MAYBE recessive White. FUN FUN DAYS are ahead!!

Wow Don. Been there and done that and got the T shirt. I can't do it this year. I am waiting to fall to hatch any more. I have a few birds i am growing out to breed in to lighten up the blue color again. Not hatching my blacks till fall either so I may not have any to show come Jan. I might have some fall birds I coiuld show if there were any shows around this area then.

Some interesting results from my experimental breedings. One of the 4 chicks is from the crossing of a Korfus Dun Splash, one is from my crossing of a Cuckoo male onto my Silver Duckwing and the other 2 are from Buff Sport onto a Black Mottled looking hen

Well I finally hit 100 chicks, not going to do as many hatchings as last year they eat too much. Most of the chicks so far are blacks LF and from an offspring I got from Bama. He is a very nice large round male and the hens are just as large as him so I am hoping to have more pullets for next year from them. I have already culled about 15 chicks but none of the black LF Orps yet so far. I only have had black LF Orps hatch so far this year with a black white split also, no lavenders but I have a broody hen now on some of those eggs. A few lav, splits and pure black Amer and a few black araucanas. Next hatch will be Lav and black Aracuanas with also lav and black splits and pure black Amer if their eggs are still good after the heat wave we just had they seemed to get a little warm in my shed this time. I gave the neighbor about 28 black Orp LF eggs to hatch to replace her flock so I will also have a back up source in the next few years. At least the blacks are easier to acquire than when I first started looking for them. Good luck everyone and hope you hatch the next Best in Show.

My husbands friend and our neighbor raises RIRs , he stopped to drop off a rototiller and asked husband where we found the heritage black turkey babies...DH said, those are chickens not turkeys.. rooster checking out the babies, we moved them closer to the house in temp pens until we check the orchard fence to make sure vermin havnt tried to tunnel under somewhere because there is a fox denning just over the hill..we have seen it on several occasions running the fence line.. we live in the middle of the forest, it is chicken vietcong out there..hawks, fox, bears, racoons and all the rest.one of our friends had a black bear rip the siding right off their coop and eat 3/4 the of her new baby well summers..she's just devestated.. she had just selected the group she wanted to begin to groom for show. Those are gone..so far the dogs seem to divert that here. this little man looked like a clipped poodle for a long time but now he is looking better. he just had patches of feathers..then they finnaly filled in . some happy campers jurassic park in the next pen, one day my heart skipped a beat when I was out checking the blossoms in the almond and peach orchard and I just froze,...... looked like a baby bear along the. Blueberry hedge..that's never a good thing if mom is in back of you somewhere..then I saw a red comb appear, it was the softies together grazing..

My last hatch resulted in 5 cockerels... 3 Splash and 2 Blues. I've got about 25 more eggs in the incubator now, hopefully in a few weeks I'll hatch out some more pullets.

I love the pictures aveca. I have never really been interested in Whites but yours sure are pretty, if I had more room I would probably have a pen for them too.

Jeremy, if its any consolation to you...I'm world famous for hatching a box of roosters..every year...I usually have just 1 pullet , so year by year I add a hen..I'm thinking one of these years I'm bound to hatch a batch of hens..
