I am still saving large fowl buff eggs and would be willing sell them to UOC members on a special deal. The buyer would be asked to pay the shipping plus $2.50 for each egg that hatches. I have not had the best luck getting shipped eggs to hatch, so this helps remove some the the financial risk.
One pen is 3/4 Clevanger strain from Bob Coulter. The other pens may have some Clevanger, but are of SQ. My phone # is 218-751-2214. This deal is for UOC members. I also have Black and Blue Oprington Bantam with the same deal.

For anyone wanting to sell birds, these ads really pay off. We get many inquiries as a result of ads in the yearbooks.

I have 185 out so far. I just candled eggs and have a bunch more to put in the hatcher in a couple of days. I will probably only set from select matings after this. Certain pens are always slow to lay fertile eggs. I have never had such good luck so early in the season. Will be nice to be done hatching and get on to spring chores without the distraction of tending the incubator and all that goes with that. I usually do about 300 chicks. I hope you are all having success.

Don is right about regular layer ration not being ample for producing viable hatching eggs. Layer ration is designed to produce eggs for consumption. This year I mixed a game bird breeder ration in with regular layer to produce a 21% feed. There is some alfalfa meal in the one layer ration used. I have never had such a good and early hatch as this year. I have about 185 chicks out right now, with more eggs still in the incubator. My wife hates chickens (except those coming out of the skillet or oven), so the marriage is approaching the perilous stage (an annual event), then the hatching stops and everything is fine. Sandy is actually a pretty good sport about this, helping with the inseminating and takes care of the chicks.

Don,
At the last Crossroads show, the champion large fowl was a black orp shown by Niki Reidel. It was from a May hatch.

For some really good coop ideas, go to cochinsinternational.cochinsrule.com. Click on members links and go to Golden Feather Farms. On the cochin accomodation tab there are some great coop ideas for breeding and conditioning both large fowl and bantams. Tom seems to have more time than I do, but then he is retired. I have met him once, a very nice fellow.

I just took 38 chicks out of the hatcher tonight, mostly orps. We are up to nearly 70 chicks so far. This is as good as I have ever done this early, especially as we had 25 below zero when I was bringing these eggs up to the house. I hope everyone else is having good luck.

For some good coop ideas, go to http;//www.bantamclub.com. Click on photos and on page one you will see a bunch of great coop ideas. I think you may have to be a member of the ABA to get on. If anyone finds some good coop ideas, they could post where to find them on this site.

Sandy and I know the feeling of wanting to swear off showing because of the whole washing thing. It is a job and I always ask myself why we put ourselves through this, but then the show comes and it all seems to be worth the effort.

Jon,
I actually pluck the vents on my Orp Bantams. Don't be afraid to pluck quite a bit. Makes for better contact. If there is still a fertility problem, we will A.I. Make sure you have the lights on for 16 hours a day.

Terra,
My birds look like yours with lots of variation in color. Working with the blue color is a good way to go crazy, but fun at the same time.

I like those pullets. I have Buff Bantams too. They were my 1st pure bred show birds.
