I do have few blues. They are a hard color to work with, but beautiful when you get a nice one. LaVerne Bergs in Henderson Minnesota also has them. For starting out, I would recommend Buff, Whites or Blacks first.

Doug Akers has some insight on this. Wish he would chime in.

We had minus 22 this morning. That makes for a challenge even with a heated barn.

Does anyone add Oxine, bleach, vitamins or anything to the water of their breeding and growing birds?. I do use Oxine in the water of my breeders and think there are less disease problems. Sometimes I wonder if adding vitamins etc is only doing good for those who sell the stuff.

We would like to do both 1/8 page ads. I would like to add: "no chicks" to both as well as to the ads in our newsletter and our web page.
Thanks, Vern and Sandy

Fred and Judy,
Thanks for putting Orpingtons on the map. This is how we create interest in Orpingtons and thats how we improve the breed.
Good work,
Vern and Sandy

Sandy and I will be coming. We are looking forward to seeing everyone. Will need help at the club table. Sandy and I have worked the club table at several National Meets and its always been fun. It is always my plan to meet several new people at any show I attend. The National Meets are a great spot to do this.

I have the same problem with toe nail color in my Black Orp Bantams and the judges have never said a word about it. I have also seen judges place a Black Orp with a bay red eye over the ones with brown eyes. And it is always the larger Orp Bantams that win.

For years we fussed ourselves to death with trying to keep water in the incubators and monitor the humidity level. Then we talked to several old timers who used the dry method in the Sportsman models. We tried it and have much better success with the dry method. We have two incubators and a separate hatcher like Bill recommended. I would recommend everyone use a separate hatcher, even if is one of the foam models. It is so nice to have clean incubators all season long.

After I made my post, I thought about eye color too. I also have Black Cochin Bantams and they do not seem to get good eye color til they are a bit older, so cannot be so hasty with the culling on those.

Some one in the feeds thread suggested that we have a column in the newsletter about what to look for when culling. Why not have the discussion on this board? Perhaps the column could come from the collection of various member's experiences.
I cull for the obvious things like color defects, comb and leg problems, etc. One thing I would suggest is to not cull LF males too soon. The cockerals that mature early and look great at county fair time (end of July or early August) are not much good for the fall shows. Those gangly teenage looking types with immature combs may take several months longer to mature, but end up being the larger better looking specimans in the long run.

My feed went up $1.50 per 50 lb. bag too. I think we all need to get better at culling. No sense in feeding the bad ones.

I get mine from Smith Poultry Supply. # 7 works well for most Orpington Bantams. Sometimes you need to use a # 9 on a male.
