Not sure if this the right place to talk about my newest members of my soon to be White program. The father of this chick is a Buff Sport, the mother are a pair of average quality Black hens who show a bit of Mottling. The offpsring is a Cuckoo. I have quite a few of these Cuckoos from this fella. i plan on moving in a couple of Black hens. One line is from eggs I hatched that Julie gave me. The other is a Milkey/Korfus hen. Both hens should make some more nice typeeee offspring. This little Cuckoo will be bred back to the Shafer White cockerel and then from that breeding back to Black. PLUS eventually I plan on bring in a Buff hen for the Buff Sport boy to breed. He is about 16 months old. Can you see the family resemblance?

We have a question about legs and feet of newly hatched orpingtons--What color will should they be? I would think that the blacks would be black, but what about the white and the buff--will they be yellow at hatch or will they be pink/white? All of the buffs at the farm and home have bright yellow legs and feet. Thanks!

If your buffs have yellow feet and legs they must be buff rocks. Orpingtons don't have yellow skin or feet and legs. A buff should have white legs and whites should have white legs. Hope this helps

The whites hatch with smokey colored to white legs.

Sometimes on newly hatched babychicks looks can be deceiving on certain blood lines.

Are you saying that your adult Buff Orpingtons have bright yellow legs ?

The autosomal recessive yellow w skin can be carried by autosomal dominant white skined W+ birds. so it is not unusual for yellow skin birds to show up in white skin lines. (Yellow skin birds have yellow legs and white skin birds have white legs.) To determine if they have yellow skin or white skin look at the bottom of their feet, because some birds have dark shanks which cover the skin color.
Orpingtons are suppose to be white skin birds. But due to various outcrossing some birds have aquired the recessive yellow skin which will give them yellow legs. if they have two copies of recessive ww. White skin birds can carry one copy of yellow skin w and still appear as W+ white skin birds. But they are capable of producing yellow skin birds. All I can say is thank goodness these are autosomal genes. Because those sex-linked genes can put you in a head spin.

Thanks for the replies. We only have one buff hen, her legs are white, slightly pinish looking. We were looking at chicks at the Farm and Home Supply store. All of the "Buff Orpingtons" have bright yellow legs and feet. Actually, I did not look at all of them, but several. I don't remember what color our hen's legs were when we got her.
We are waiting for some white orpington eggs to hatch. We are hoping that the trip here didn't cause any problems and the incubator settings were the right ones! Thanks!

Some hatcheries mix breed there chickens, so that is possible. They have rock or another yellow legged breed in there.
