This past week when I was buying feed I decided to try a scratch put out by FRM that is 16% protein thinking it will help with feather conditioning for the winter. Has anyone used this before and with what results. Is it worth the extra dollars. I just give them a bit in morning or evening depending temps. They have 16% pellets the rest of time all they want. I try to let my birds freerange sometimes. Most of the time it is in the summer and fall. I let them out for a bout 1 hr late evening the other day and they wanted to eat my pansies. I had to stand guard till they went back to their coops

It's very good feed, that is what we fed the gamecocks when I was doing that. I would think you might want some grit out for the birds. When we fed that it had cowpeas in it also and they are pretty hard.

I give my birds some scratch feed from a local mill in the evening during colder winter months. Besides cracked corn and millet, I can't remember the other ingredients. My aim is to help keep them warmer over night as they digest the corn especially.
The mill also produces a gamecock feed with a lot of whole grains in it which I considered but haven't bought yet. Several years ago an aquaintance who showed land and waterfowl recommended "race horse oats" for feather conditioning. I feed my chickens and geese a mixture of game and turkey feed and oats. For what its worth, I don't show my birds.

You can never go wrong feeding oats. I soak oats for my guys. Sunday is oat day, that is all they get. It's like a treat to them. They love them. I have there breeders feed in feeders, but as long as there is oats there, thats what they eat.

What is the market price for soft white wheat? We get hard red winter wheat for $10.00 a 50 lb bag. I know the protein on out wheat is like 14 to 15 % protein which is a good supplement and I would think yours would be the same in protein.

I have no idea what barrels sell for in your part of the country, but in Oklahoma the barrell would be around $10 and paying $1 a pound would be very high priced wheat. Before I started feeding gamebird breeder I mixed up a mix and I used Calf Mana for a supplement. I used scratch and a egg crumbles and thought I was getting it done. I had some Old English bantams and didn't have much luck hatching them. Thats when I changed to gamebird breeder. I saw on the Ohio boars where I guy mixed gamebird starter (28%) and egg pellets along with calf mana and sunflowers seeds and said his birds did good on it and hatched good. I have thought about the gamebird starter and egg crumble mix, it would be alittle cheaper. don
