Fall has came to western Oklahoma. Get's down in 50's in the morning and the birds are happy. Talked to Terry Britt last night, he lost over 150 standard birds this summer. He said he lost all his early orpingtons and rocks. He said he had never lost so many birds to heat. I know I lost alot of my early guys also. I would think we will be showing younger birds this fall.

Sorry to hear of soo many losses, wonder what made this year different from years past? Yes it was hot but was it a record everywhere?
We have been feeling fall for a little while Don here in NC, dipping in the low to mid 60's at night and mid 70's to mid 80's during the day. We have seen allot of rain as of late, something we always need just wish it would space out a bit more than just pouring for days all at once.

It has been a miserable summer for alot of folks from what I have been reading. i feel lucky to only have lost 2 adult Orps and 3 or 4 juvies. I have a few of the Buffs from Terry. And they did okay with the high 90's and the 5 days over 100. But down in Texas and OK it has been in the 110 range. And that is very hard on these bigger birds. It seems like the scrawny birds make it and the bigger ones have the issues. Lets hope next year will get back to normal. Indy had it's second highest number of days over 90 since they have been keeping track.

You know Terry said he only lost one Black Cochin, you would think they would be like a orp. In all my losses, I lost one Cochin also. I didn't raise but 6 and that was it. I lost maybe 3 or 4 bantam orps from the heat. I got Gracie (new grandbaby) some Dark Cornish bantams, this was a wreck from the go. Hard to get fertile eggs, hard to hatch and then the hot days was the finish. Maybe next summer it will be a little cooler. Bill, forgot to ask, will you have a extra Cuckoo male this fall?

Don Don I have 9 or 10 Cuckoos I hatched out and should have one for you if you like. My genetics with them is not as nice as Christina's. I used 2 daughters from my BUSTOFF. And you all know about him. But, with that being said, these Cuckoo chicks seem to be better then I would be expecting. Those Black girls are in molt. And there again I used my bottom quality pullet last year with BUS to make these pullets, which are now hens. Here is an example of the quality level of the Black hens I used with my Harry S Cuckoo cock. This girl is in a pen with her full brother a tank of a Black I call BOSS HOGG. You can see a glimpse of the HOGG behind her. I also have my only 2 Black Orp hens I hatched from Julie B in with them. Both of those girls are in full molt and so is BOSS Little blurry but should give you a hint of what he and my Korfus line girl produced. I like their heads. But could use a darker eye. With Cuckoos though that is not an issue.
