Here is a photo of a couple youngsters I have growing out. Looking good! black pullet is really cute to. Looks a little dark in the face or maybe it is from the picture, but that will lighten up with age!!!

Mrs. Pittman, the Orpington Club wants to Thank You for taking on something like this. The youth are the future of the Orpington Breed Me to. I think you will do a great job. I dont know if you are fill up on offers/prizes? My hens are not laying at the moment, but if you want to put me down for a dozen postage paid blue and black APA birds for a prize for a youth? I would be glad to donate such a prize.

I think we have several different kinds of alfalfa pellets and cubes at the local tsc and agway...soaking would be a great idea..i love it that you could get the whey for the birds..boy i wish things were like the good old days..we are luckey to live inbetween several mills..owego has one, elmira has one and monroeton pa..i use pastor romigs choice of grower pellets from shaffers feed mill.., it has a little something green in it..might be alfalfa, not sure..he and faulkners were feeding it..it seems to keep a nice weight on them ..their birds always looked so good..i had been kind of mixing it with layena for the hens..love hearing how you could get things like the whey..we have a giant cheese plant here , but honestly it looks like a fortress, i wouldnt even know how to get in the place.. I hope things perk back up out Christinas way..hate to hear she had to cut way down.. I am not getting rid of my chickens, just culling down and not letting birds slide through that maybe should of been culled. I will always breed Orpigntons

The sun will bleach a choc like a buff? Yup, just like the buffs the sun will wash them out.

Harry, that is a great idea. I just wish a few people would volunteer. It is hard sometimes finding articles for the newsletter.
I started to feed whole grains, my feed contains hard red wheat, soft white wheat, oats, peas, lysine\selinium\zinc, also some baled alfalfa chopped up. This farmer was also able to get me some bone meal. I will be binding it with oil or red cell. I am going to experiment for a while. It ends up running 12.00 for a 50# bag and I get to support a local farmer! Times are tough around here lately and I will be culling harder than I ever have before.

Duane those are just the shafts on the feathers. Once the feather erupts fully they will fall off.

We have 2 1/2 month old black Orpington chicks with light pink to whitish earlobes. The white is not the bright white like leghorns, but a dull/flat white. Can we expect this to improve with age? The rooster has bright red earlobes, but the hen has some white on earlobes. We do have a couple of chicks with red earlobes from the mating. Thanks. Just watch that bird. They are lighter when they are younger and that is probably what you are seeing. I would not worry to much until they are 5-6 months. If you see enamel in the birds earlobe it will look similar to shiny white out.

They all look great. That blue girl looks like she is going to be a huge bird. Very nice splash male as well.

Mine do just fine here in eastern Washington, the same as the american birds.
