Second Question: A Black, out of the Blue Gene (Incomplete Dominance) Blue x Blue= 25 splash 50 blue 25 Black, carries no Blue gene so a mating of Black to Black would produce only Black ? Third Question Where the heck does the Blue gene go! Just disappears? My head hurts!!!! John John, Do you understand algebra very well?? Think of blue as Bb. When you multiply Bb X Bb like in a punnet square, you end up with BB, Bb, bB, and bb. BB = black Bb = blue bb = splash Does that help? Sorry to take so long to get back to you!! If any thing has to do with algebra I am deep trouble. I will try to learn by show and tell.....and to that end I will post some pictures of chicks showing colors, then stand back and watch ya'll giggle and chuckle ;D John

Thank You Jon I will spend much time trying to understand it ... My first question is, Why does the order of color make a differences? Choc x Black = 100 Choc split (Black showing) males 100 Choc females Black x Choc = 100 Choc split males 100 Black females John

What is the market price for soft white wheat? We get hard red winter wheat for $10.00 a 50 lb bag. I know the protein on out wheat is like 14 to 15 % protein which is a good supplement and I would think yours would be the same in protein. Don I think market price is around $6 a bushel.....this is feild run (whatever comes out of the feild uncluding a small amout of other seeds)....claim is the last test for protein was 10% John

You can never go wrong feeding oats. I soak oats for my guys. Sunday is oat day, that is all they get. It's like a treat to them. They love them. I have there breeders feed in feeders, but as long as there is oats there, thats what they eat. Don How about feeding Soft White Winter Wheat? Fed as a supplement I can get it for a $1 a pound...must buy 55lbs but it comes with a 55 gal food grade barrel w\lid.

Sorry Christina I was not very clear with my question I was referring to eggs collected out of the nest's With temps at or below freezing around the clock I was wondering if the eggs would still be ok to incubate Hence the low temp question. However the answer did teach me something...I was keeping my eggs no longer than 10 days before I set them, now that I can stretch that out. John

For several weeks I went back and forth on whether to go to the WFFS. most of the time I landed on the side of not going. A five hour round trip just seemed more than what I wanted to do, knowing I would only stay an hour and a half at the most. That all went away when I found out that I would be going for a much more important reason than to see my first chicken show (other than walking through our poultry barn at the state fair a couple decades ago) During a phone call to Christina I quickly decided to go pick up some very very special chickens and the show became a secondary benefit. When we (we being my grandson and I) woke up Saturday morning at 5AM we soon discovered that a heavy fog had moved in and it was below freezing!! From Salem, Oregon through Vancouver, Wash it was fog, slick and cold..so cold in fact that the temp gauge did not get off cold unless I shut off the heater. Any other time I would have said the heck with this but I was going to pickup something I had waited 3 years for..White Orpingtons! Now I could have gotten eggs from others (maybe) but I wanted my Whites to come from Christina, WOW oh WOW was it ever worth the time and trip. Little did I know what would really happen though. I was picking up one breeding pair of Whites + one cuckoo pullet, so I put in the van one medium pet carrier and one small carrier. By the time I started home I had at total of 7 (yes seven) chickens That was where the real fun started....we managed to get them all in the carriers but it was not long after leaving that, we knew that was not going to work. So as we are driving down the freeway my grandson got in the back and took two of the chickens out and let them loose in the van. low and behold they stayed next to the two carriers, from time to time hopping up on one or the other carrier too see out the windows or just stretch there heads up to look out..there was a few times I thought those driving next to us where going to wreck due to shock at seeing those loose chickens looking at them. that alone made the trip worth it.. that was until I started to think about where I was going to put these chickens, I had no real room for those that I planed to get let alone the others. When I got home I jury rigged a safe place for them and decided to wait until Monday to redo most of my pens (all made out of chain link fence panels I ended up with a pair of Whites, two black hens, a pair of Blues and one cuckoo hen. man what a trip and what a great great addition to my chickens. Thank You Thank You Christina oh and just so you understand THANK YOU ;D John PS I spent all day Monday redoing pen's so the pictures will come later

John, from Salem, Oregon..I have had farm animals for decades, had many types of show stock, (I think it is just a much work to feed and care for good stuff as grade stuff) however that has never applied to chickens until recently. So I am behind the eight ball. Working on learning but not sure I will ever understand what gene does what. I can not claim that my Orp's are mine simply because what I have I have bought from others, maybe next year I can say this or that was a "my choice" breeding. Looking forward to makeing a show in my area (if there are any)and placing name and faces together.
