Hello everyone, I am on the lookout for some bantam orpingtons that I can start breeding for my son. I have large fowl buff's but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good color for a beginner breeder? I like the blue's, but I am told they are difficult to breed, especially for one who is new to breeding poultry. Is breeding black or white pretty much the same difficulty? I'm headed to a couple shows this month and I'd like to have an idea of what to look for.

I started with black bantams. I have had my kids in 4H for 2 years now and the black bantams have been great for them. 2nd year we showed ones we hatched ourself and did alright.

In the bantams blacks and whites are pretty close in their quality. One obstacle you have with whites is that they are harder to keep clean than the blacks, which isnt necessarily a bad thing when one is learning to breed and condition birds for show.

I'm starting to think it may just be a question of what is available at the shows I am attending. Being in Arizona, I am somewhat isolated from most Orpington breeders. I don't see many out here! Hopefully I see at least a few in Farmington, N.M., but I doubt I'd find one in the Tucson poultry show I'm attending. If worse comes to worse, I'll have to ship some in. (Which is fine, but I would like to avoid the cost of shipping if possible)
