We have a few nice black Orps, BUT the have black in combs and wattles. We have been having lots of white toenails, but the ones with the black faces and combs have dark toenails. Are these common problems with Orps? Would you use the dark faced ones for breeding? Thanks.

Do they have the black face, called gypsy face, as adults? I know some lines of Australorps have the black faces as young birds but redden out as they mature.

Thanks! They are about 3-4months old and one of the pullets would be closer to six months. The black is the wattles, combs, ear lobes, and face. Different amounts-- some are black areas others nearly completely black.

Don't know about stds, but my bantam black orps have never had any black in comb, earlobe or wattles. White toenails I have, seems never to affect them at shows. Did the black just happen or was they hatched with it?

I have large fowl that show gypsy faces but when they mature they have turned bright red, Toe nails are starting to become black instead of white after culling for several years. Same thing with the Ameraucanas and Araucanas.
