Hi Randy, nice to meet you.
And thanks Julie. I have been having a blast fussing over these chickens, I have to admit I was pretty lost after doc said no more horse bizness. Chickens have been a wonderful substitute.
I am nothing without the lord either, I have no wins without him.. Our pastor is from. Britain, he said the cutest thing to husband and and I last week, he said....Lynne GOD made you an artist,'he best find you doing that when he comes a calling...he made some people good chicken breeders, he best find them doing that when he calls. So Julie, keep breeding the best the lord can offer for us to enjoy.
Lynne
And hi to Jeremy too!

Hi,
I'm a newbie also. I live in Northern, CA, about two hours North of Sacramento. My Son and I moved here about ten years ago and now we have a Grandson too!
I was married at one time! lol He didn't really appreciate my hobby, so I had to decide between him and the chickens.............and well, he's gone!
At any rate, I've been breeding poultry for quite a long time but only recently was introduced to the Buff Orpington, on this level that is. A friend of mine gifted me a couple dozen Clevenger hatching eggs and that was the beginning of a love story. Currently I have two breeding trios. Such magnificent birds, huge, love them.
I also breed the ever annoying Black Copper Marans. Now there's a love hate relationship if ever I saw one. My other Orpingtons are one breeding quad consisting of a Splash roo and three Black hens.
Oh, can't forget the dogs! Two of them, Cody, my chocolate Lab and Bell my Staffy and the old very old cat in the barn! ;D
PS My name is Debi

Hi All,
Thanks for the welcome! After I posted that intro..............I forgot my pass word and well...................geeez..............getting old ain't for sissies that's for sure.
I just post a rather long comment on the topic called "Dare we discuss Lavenders" or something close to that. If any of you get a chance to read it, I'd appreciate any information you can send my way. I have 25 Lavender chicks coming in out of Tennessee in about four weeks.
Also, Don, I checked into the Black Orps in Oaklahoma. :-((

Hello, my name is Bob Gilbert. I am an APA General licensed judge from east-central Illinois. Just this past year I and Sarah Sims, a 4H mother with 4 children involved in showing poultry at their county fair, formed a partnership known as Pullet Surprise Exhibition chickens. We are working with 4 breeds which are Australorps(both in LF and Bantams), Buckeyes, Buff Orpingtons, and Rhode Island Reds(both in LF and bantams). Our first Orpingtons came from Doug Akers and we added some pullets from Fred Farthing. Sarah's son exhibited a pair of Buff Orpingtons at their county fair last August where the Cockerel was Champion LF in the 4H, Junior, and Open shows. He later was named Champion overall of the Junior and Open shows. Needless to say, we are excitedly hatching as many chicks from this male and his full sib brother with each having 2 females mated with them. We are hoping to hatch 50-60 chicks this season. Our first chicks out look very promising. We're glad to be a part of the UOC and will do our best to help support the breed. Bob

I have a question to ask all of you. My birds just aren't laying. The weather has been a bit odd here in Northern California but it was odd last year too and by this time I was getting about 70 eggs a week. Right now I'm lucky to be getting 30.
I feed a very high quality feed with a good 20% protein content. About three times a week I give them a game bird feed, whole grains, just as a treat. I also started giving them Kings Feed supplement. About a cup mixed in with their daily ration. They get to free range on an acre of pasture grass and love eating the walnut meats from the 13 old walnut trees on the property.
I don't use lights although I do have them installed in one of the larger coops. My Orps were laying an egg a day until about a week ago and then some of them just quit altogether. No one is molting or broody and every one looks very healthy and not over weight. My Marans, 21 of them, are laying about 6 eggs a day. I just don't get it. Anyone have any suggestions??
