I want to try making Lemon Cuckoo bantams. I have a Cuckoo Orp male and I have buff orp females. If I cross these, any idea what will happen.

You might make Crele Don Possible, I was going to breed my LF cuckoo male to my buff females and see what happens. I just have to see if the buffs are carrying wheaten or some other gene. I know of lines that are partirdge carring to. You still should get some that are buff colored with dirty tails and improve from there.

I made crele rosecombs about 6 or 7 years ago. I got a cuckoo rosemale male and crossed him on BBRed females. I also crossed a crele old english male on BBRed females. It takes a while to get the comb right going with a old english. I crossed the two different matings and got crele's. I have never got a crele rosecomb male the looks like the old english. Femals are fine. I have got tried of those and thought the lemon deal might be fun. How would the buffs carry a wheaton gene? I know anything is possible.

I will find my article I have that can explain this better when I have a day off and can post it

Hi Don, wanted to check in and see if you ever started this project? Would love to see pics if you have gotten anywhere. The bantams have become my priority (and favorite), hoping to show several colors this fall and try to get them some more notice. I also have several color projects going of my own as well. My wish list: A pair of whites & cuckoo's

My cuckoo male started off good, I had him in with 2 black females, all at once he went to shooting blanks. He had no bugs and seemed to be in great health. So I have put the lemon project on hold. Would have been fun to see what turned up.

I would much be interested in the whites! Our fall shows start in Oct here. So far plan to take out a blue pullet, buff pullet and hen and a black or two depending on who looks good enough and is ready. Would be great to add whites to the group!

Not too sure IF the genetics are too far different in Bantams as in LF's. I have some of these LF Cuckoos I hatched out from Harry. I only had cocks to use. I took my best to some Black hens to make more Cuckoos, that is working out well. The number 2 Cuckoo cock I have in with two totally different Buff hens. Here is what I have been hatching out from that mix. The bird on the left is the Cuckoo/Buff mix. The one of the right is my other project bird. Was originally going after Jubilees, but am thinking of switching gears to the obvious. I go with the flow when I do projects and let them take me to varieties that were not originally part of the plan.

Will you cross back to a buff? Don Don, I will cover my bases and cross back to Buff and take sibling to sibling. Worse case with going back to Buff is, I will be following Dan Honour's plan to make a richer colored Buff. Dan said it would take 4 generations of doing, but the results would be an eye popping Buff color. I used my ole Buff cock which had sired some darn nice Buffs last year as the foundation stock in these mixes. So the genetics will be there to tap back into to bring out some Orpy type birds. I have about 8 or so of these crosses. This being the oldest. IF I have some spare cockerels I will be glad to share IF you like to use one in your program.

I think I'll take you up on that, if you have a extra. I won't need him long and could send back.

Sure thing Don. I am still hatching out some Cuckoo LF's. IF you like one of them too have at it. These Cuckoos I have that are offspring from Harry's boys are something else. Also on my list of varieties to do are Black Brown Red and Lemon Blues. This one mix that Larry Lee encouraged the breeding that made him has been throwing all kinds of neat varieties that I did not know were a variety until just recently. This is one of the BBR's from last fall's breeding of my mutt. 1/2 Black Orp, 1/4 Akers Buff Orp, and 1/4 Meyer Hatchery Heinz 57 This is these Cuckoos I am making thanks to Harry S. I took the Harry Cuckoo male to one of my Milkey/Korfus hens. Actually i have 2 hens in with the daddy to this girl.
