I hear baby chicks in the bator. They are due Friday. Been 2 years since I raised any babies. I did hatch some for Roy and mailed them to him. I know I'm late for the Crossroads on Standards but the bantams should be fine.

Don,
At the last Crossroads show, the champion large fowl was a black orp shown by Niki Reidel. It was from a May hatch.

That is encouraging Vern. I think I am going to be heavy on cockerels again if things don't change. They do have nice big head though.

I finally have some babies. I have some of my nice black males eggs hatching right now! It feels more like spring. Got off a little early from work because our census is low. Spent a little extra time with the birds. I have many promising breeders even with the bobcat attack.

Nice to hear the good news... ;D We have had our own problems, possum eating our nice silkies, our own bobcat ate our Royal Palm's.... However after being on lock down most of the winter we saw the bobcat dead in the street about a block west. Car hit the poor thing. I was mad as all heck at it but seeing it dead in the street alone was really sad. We also got the stupid possum and re-homed him... Now that spring is here we have our own hope again...

My second batch is to come off Wed. Much better this time, more or higher% of fertile eggs. I guess the birds like nice weather also.

Slow gettin out of the gate here too. I am sure the weather or amount of sunlite has much to do with it.

I have 185 out so far. I just candled eggs and have a bunch more to put in the hatcher in a couple of days. I will probably only set from select matings after this. Certain pens are always slow to lay fertile eggs. I have never had such good luck so early in the season. Will be nice to be done hatching and get on to spring chores without the distraction of tending the incubator and all that goes with that. I usually do about 300 chicks. I hope you are all having success.

Congrats everyone on your hatches. My first two hatches were terrible and the last 4 have been good. I have so many folks waiting for chicks not to mention that we need a whole gob of chicks to grow out for our own flock. I hope to grow out 200 orps, blacks and buffs and blues. we will also grow out 2oo Rhode Island Reds. and I don't want to slight the Javas and the others. Looks like a busy season ahead. Just love this warm weather. ;D

Had a good hatch today but gave most of the chicks away. I even gave away all 7 rare white chicks that hatched to my nephew. Did keep the chicks from Julie's male and they look real promising plus one late hatch white. Kept two F3 Lavender chicks with one having the widest head hatched in any color so far and hope it looks like one of the males from my F2 that already looks like an Orpington and not gamey looking.
