It was mentioned in the fluffiness topic about adding black to buff or even australorp. What is the best way to do this and how long does it take. Use black into buff. If you use a black rooster and buff hen, then what? Keep the best male progeny to use back on the buff mother? How many generations until you have a pure looking buff again?

Carm, I don't remember seeing that. I'll have to look. I wouldn't breed black into buff. I'll go and look.

My mistake Don, I misread one of your posts. You mentioned black birds and said you thought about adding this to your buffs. I took it as the black but you meant the 1/2 english buffs. Sorry for the confusion.
Is adding black a bad idea though? I have seen some nice bigger birds. And a way to add some new genetics. I was intrigued that it might totally open up what I could add for new genetics.
Does anyone have any experience adding a shot of something different?
Thanks

You have to take into consideration all the problems that wil be created and have to be corrected. Different variety of Orps have different Eye color, and leg color.

Carm I have crossed a Black cock onto an Exhibition Buff hen. Did this 5 years ago. Except I took a hatchery mutt mix to test the fertility of my Buff hens. Thought the new Buff cock I seen mount was the daddy of the first few eggs from the Buff hens I hatched out until they hatched. They were from the Black cock. I kept the one silver/Dun male outta 5. Breed him back to both Black and Blue. First few seasons I got as mentioned a whole lot of mixed traits from this crossed line. Mostly coming from the mutt mix daddy genetics. Last season I hatched out the best Black cock ever that came from this line. his daddy was a Brown/Red who is the son of the Silver/Dun cross. This season the best Black I hatched out was a very nice cockerel from my pure Black line. Nice to have your own source of new blood. I would not hesitate doing all over again. Except this time it would be with a pure Black orp cock and not a mutt.
