Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place but I didn't see an introductions thread. I am new to the club and Orpingtons. I started with Orps last year and have culled my original line. I have LF bbs and buffs.
The buffs were given to me by Don and the I have 2 lines in the bbs (a trio of Korfus and 1 lone black cockerel from unknown linage). This year was my first experience with an incubator and I have 9 Orp chicks from that hatch. I think I have 4 pullets & 5 cockerels. I have 10 buffs with 6 pullets and 4 cockerels. All the chicks were hatched mid March through first week of April. I also have a broody that has 2 blue chicks she hatched a few weeks ago & another broody with about 8 eggs that started hatching today.
I am guessing I will keep one black cockerel and most of the pullets in the bbs. The buffs I will keep at least 2 cockerels and most of the pullets. I have one buff pullet without a toe nail and if I am not mistaken that is a genetic fault she will pass to her offspring.
I am going to try to condition some for upcoming Fall shows. The ABA nationals will be in Knoxville, TN this December and next year the APA will be here, plus there will be some small local shows to try out.
Glad to be here and look forward to learning. Angie

Nice to have you here littlechicklet. I think if I read your post rite you want to use the Korfus girls with the unknown cockerel. IF I was you, I would first use the Korfus trio for breeding then later on, maybe in the fall try the unknown male. Korfus should know what she gave you would work well together. unless she said otherwise, OR unless this unknown male is tremendous I would hold off on that breeding till you get 20 to 30 chicks from the Korfus trio. Korfus sent me a quad 4 years ago. The male was close to 10 lbs, the hens were very nice size. I believe she told me these hens were part Moore and part Pontious. All I know is I still have the 3 hens, and they are all still laying well. They are 5 years old, which according to Doug Akers is outstanding to have that type of fertility for 5 yr old hens. This is just my opinion. I could be wrong. I do not follow the norm when it comes to breeding Orps. Dons Buffs should give you some excellent birds to work with as well. IF you ever have any questions feel free to post away on the general board. This site is stocked with with seasoned orp breeders. many of them are not BYCers like I use to be. I have been driven away by a a group folks there but here we are all adults and seem to get along well. Nice to have you here. We all look forward to hearing how you do with your Orps at the shows. Have fun and enjoy your birds. Bill

lildinkem- Hi and I was wondering where you had been. Its good to see you again.
I should have clarified about my Korfus trio. I purchased them from a breeder in Tellico Plains,TN knowing they were her culls. Culls or not they are still nice birds (much, much nicer than the other line I had started with). One pullet has very light eyes and the other pullet's blue color is not good. As far as type goes they seem good to me. The unknown linage cockerel is the one I posted a pic of on byc & I think you and someone else said to use him. He is taller and has more hock showing than the others which is something I personally like.
Now out of the chicks I hatched I have some showing nice type but some of those have the light eyes (maybe not as bad as the pullet they came from). I am going to wait and see how they come along and hopefully have a few I can cross with my black cockerel (Uno). I have one nice black cockerel (Tonka) from the hatch I really want to see how he turns out. So I am guessing out of the bbs chicks 1 good cockerel and maybe 2 or 3 decent pullets to go with the blue pullet with dark eyes. I will not hatch anymore off the light eyed black pullet but keep her since she has gone broody & is a good mom.
Now as far as Don's buffs go I already have an excellent start and will not have the issues I have with my bbs.
Once I figure out how to upload pics I will post some of the gang.
Sorry to hear about byc.

You have to get a Photobucket account (or something like it) set up for free. Then load them there from your computer and cut & paste the URL from each pic and put that in between these brackets with img in them and then you post and it will work. This is in front [ing]] I put an "n" instead of "m' or this program would not let you see what I wrote. It should be "img" in between these brackets
this is after the url [/ing] Again I had I put an "n" instead of "m' or this program would not let you see what I wrote. It should be "img" in between these brackets
it will look like this You have to get a Photobucket account set up for free. (I removed an "n" so it would appear or I could not load it up for you to see.)
The pullet with lite eyes would not scare me from using her. Just make sure you use a male with very dark eyes. Interesting, my mom & dad live off of lake Telico, which I believe is about 20 mins from there. Yes, I remember him. He is worth using. Iam not afraid of cross breeding lines like others may not like. I made a line from a Meyer hatchery mutt mix crossed onto an Akers Buff hen. The results were 5 chicks. 4 are what you expect, red with blotches of black. BUT, the one I kept I called him BUSTOFF. He was 11 lbs at 11 months old. He was a Dun/Silver. I was told by Harry if I use him back to a nice female then let the offspring breed to each other I could get anything and everything under the sun when it comes to strange new to the Orp world varieties. I did what Harry suggested. I made a very nice pair of Brown Reds. The one I called Frank I shown at Crossroads 2 years ago. He too was 11 lbs at 10 months old. He died. I then used his brothers who made 2 very UK type looking males. Last summer I posted pics of the one I called Yosemite. Alan Ammarell sent me an email saying if he was was me would breed the cr@p outta that bird. So, you can not get anymore an outcross then what I have made. I listen to folks like Harry, Alan, Doug, Paul, and my best buddy her in Indy Larry Lee Buffalo who suggested I breed the 5 Akers hens I originally got from him to my horniest male (the Meyer mutt mix) to see if they would make fertile eggs. Up till then he never had any fertile eggs. But, he ran one nice Buff orp cock with 30 hens. no, wonder they never were fertile. I did that. Fertility was good. So, use what you have that is your best is what I say. Once you figure out how to load pics here plug them in and show us what you have and I am sure many here can give you ideas on how is best to breed them. I had a Tonka a few years ago but he was a Buff. Just like my old Tonka truck I destroyed playing with as a kid. Love that name. Ideally you want to take your best hen back to the best cockerel you make back to her. To recapture the genetics she has to relicate them for future offspring. That is why I am using my sons of my Brown red. My original Blacks have great type, nice size, they just needed a little better tail. Doug is known in our Orp club to have made some outstanding Orps with fantastic tails. Plus, they are very nice size. You will for sure get a chance to see some down there next year at the big Orp Nationals being held in Knoxville. So, my plan is to use these males like Alan said. Keep 2 or 3 of the very best males to move on into the future with my Blacks. But, most important is to have fun. Do not get too wrapped up in what others says and think about your birds. Their your birds. Your the only judge who's opinion matters. Far as BYC goes, all you have to see, is how many guests have visited us here on our UOC Forum to know that those BYC Orps threads are getting boring. Pretty much not a whole lot of teaching, more of one or two or three folks posting pics of the same old birds. Here I know I am amongst friends who understand the value in teaching and helping others. I share what I have learned from my mentors, like Doug Akers, Larry Lee Buffalo, Harry Shafer, (Doug's mentor) Jack Patterson, Don Chandler, Christina Korfus amongst others I know and admire. Here we can learn, and you do not see others pushing one's buttons to get a response to "REPORT" a person to get then "BANNED". lol

Okay, let me see if I can get this to work. Here is the gang. This is Uno the unknown linage cockerel. He was hatched Sept. 2012 Now here is the Korfus trio: Boris & Bebe hatched around Aug. 2012 BB hatched April 2012 These pics are not the most current for them but not that old. Correct me if I am wrong but I think the type is there more than not. As you can see Uno is taller and I like that.

Angie, glad you made it to the UOC Board. On this board you can ask some of the better orp breeder in the
US any question you wish. We all can learn about orps here with out all the BS that other boards have.
It doesn't take that long to see what I', talking about. There is folks that has top show birds, UK birds
or orps that came from the hatchery. It's a place to ask questions and learn. Glad you made it. How's
the weather in east TN? Your birds looks very good. Wish I had half the shade you have.

Thank you.
Don, the weather is wet & hot most days here but we will hit a dry spell soon enough. The birds have plenty of shade here and seem to use it.
The second pic of the Buffs is Pasty (the little pullet I almost lost). I am going to condition her I think. She has been growing up with the blues & blacks I hatched and does not like the buffs. LOL
What do you guys think of the little black cockerel I hatched; Tonka? Does he look like he is going to be a decent one? I really like him.
And one last question what will happen if I cross my black cockerel to a lavender split pullet? I picked one up from El and don't know what I am going to do with her.

Your on the BYC boards and we both have some of Don's chicks just a few weeks apart. I was wondering if I needed to introduce myself. So I am going to follow your lead.
Your birds are looking good. I would love to see some updated pics of your buffs.

Thank you. I have not been posting on byc. I can't upload pics there anymore. I posted some new pics on here under the LF buff thread.
Its nice to see you over here. I think we are both lucky to get some of Don's chicks. Have you posted pics of yours on here? I would like to see them too.

I don't know the first thing about showing birds but am trying to learn. The guy in my Avi is one of his cockerels. I am still trying to figure out how to use this site. As I play over the next couple days I will post more pics. Out of the 10 I hatched I got 1 pullet and 9 cockerels. Hoping some of these cockerels grow out nice for maybe a fall show and if not then the spring shows for sure. I haven't done a show yet so I am counting on the bird doing all the hard work for me.
