I have the chance to get a book from 100 years ago. The gentleman who is selling the book was kind enough to send me pics he copied. And I could only save them as thumbnail so I took a pic of these pics. To me these look like a perfect blend of Orpington lines that we are seeing being made today. Makes me want to break out my 75%er from Julie and do what Christina says and throw that bad boy in with her big ole hens. and just MAYBE I can make a Black that looks like this. MAYBE Christina isn't just a pretty face and actually knows how to breed? And should be given credit for her abilities in her breeding theories.

Joy I am buying this book this wekend from this guy. I hope it will be loaded with more REAL Orpington pics like these. I think one man out there wished I had never came upon this book, and these pics. More ammo for you all who like what your doing.

I've got a couple of old poultry books from the early 1900s and one from 1898 (it doesn't have pictures). I agree that the pictures of the orp winners in those look much more like what our birds some of us are breeding look like. I'll have to see if I can scan some of those in.

I haven't seen the book, just these pics and I knew I wanted it. His other book is a bit more pricey $150, but is also well worth it for an original copy

Great pics. I love reading the old stuff. I think I have a young black cock that looks like that second photo you showed Bill. Thanks for sharing with us Do you think this girl has that body shape?

I am going to get the hard copy of this book that has these pics from Mr. Dan the Leghorn Man. It is signed and dated by the author and was a gift to the well known Columbian Leghorn breeder Richard Harwood. Should be a great book to have as a refference. Here is a little info about Richard Julie, your girl may have been the reincarnation of that very same Black hen. She is stellar!
