Hello there, just thought I'd poke my head in the buff forum and introduce myself. I'm a buff fan, though I am just getting started with the business of raising them. I've had a rough first year as I've been learning how to breed and hatch them, but this next year I am super excited to breed earlier and have more hatches! I just went to a show in Farmington, N.M. this weekend as well, and showed all five of my birds. My cock bird got reserve champion English, so I was pretty excited since it was my first real show. I'm not really good at taking pics yet, but I tried to take a couple snapshots with my phone. Here is my cock bird that won reserve English: Here is my good hen as well. My other is in better condition, but she is a bit smaller and narrower. Lookin good!!

Here are my Buffs that I just picked up at the Ohio National show. Was honored to be able to acquire these wonderful birds from Alan Ammarell.

I was planning on taking a cockerel to the show in shawnee but due to lack of good prep pens they have messed up their combs from pacing along the wire. Now I am not sure if I should take either of them. How long does it take a comb to heal up? I have never really paid attention to it.

They will have a black scab for a couple weeks but should be healed within 3-4 weeks. You could still show him as long as it doesnt look too bad.

I got a different cage yesterday and I am going to pull the least damaged one and put him in it today. He is not my favorite but will be the most show ready. I guess if I get serious about showing I will need to come up with better conditioning pens.

My friend told me the best ones are simple 4x4x4 pens for the more dual purpose type birds.

I'm pretty new to raising orps, but I had a cock bird who was showing signs of frostbite at a show last month (it was quite a bit worse than yours). I put a mix of witch hazel and baby oil on his comb and it clearly up nicely overnight. Even so, your cockerel looks pretty good, I would suggest taking him to the show in his current condition. I'm curious to hear what more experienced people think though.
