I am going to post some quotes from other breeders on liquid iodine use for poultry. We had a breeder tell us if our birds have poor fertility put some Iodine in their water. Have any of you guys ever been told this before or even practice this. There appears to be some Pros and Cons on this Issue. I am posting a WARNING with this: use at you own discretion. Because to much iodine can be toxic. And most likely if you have fertile heathy productive birds they most likely don't need Iodine. BUT if you have infertile, nonlaying, nonproductive birds, will iodine help them? ? There are several birds that require iodine supplements such as finches, budgerigars, so on and so forth. I have been doing a little reserch on this, so if anybody has any info on this I am interested.

We have been putting iodine in the water trays in our incubator and hatcher. It doses make it smell better, plus it stops bacteria growth in the water. We had a breeder tell us that there is a bacteria that can grow in incubator and hatcher water that can transfer to the eggs and babychicks through the moisture and iodine will destroy this bacteria.

I have used liquid iodine in the water once a week for the 35 years I have been breeding pigeons and I feel it was very helpful with fertility and especially the hatching process. When ever someone had trouble with chicks hatching, my first suggestion was always iodine and it was usually the solution.
That said I am new to chicken breeding but can't imagine much difference. I have been using it on the chicks I have for the whole 6 weeks I have had them so far.
I do like to use both a product called Lugol's and the regular tamed iodine (do not use tincture of iodine).

OK, I'm not clear. 1 teaspoon of Lugol and 1 teaspoon of tamed iodine. Where do you buy this stuff. Also, like I have a trio in one pen, a gallon of water will last longer than a day. Is that all right or do they just get it for one day? I want to try this.

Okay Don (I think??), I use both products but not at the same time. You can use the simple Tamed Iodine at one teaspoon per gallon of water one day a week (adjust amount as needed; ie 1/2 teaspoon for 1/2 gallon). During the breeding season (for my pigeons mid Dec. - June) I use the Lugols. It is an iodine based product but has added ingredients. I get it from a pigeon supply house, Global Pigeon Supply. I think it is GA.
If you need more info let me know.
