Alan used to be in the club, he did get rid of his birds, I think that guys name is McCarty that got the buffs. I talked to him a time or two on the phone. I thought he said Alans mother had the whites. Not for sure on the white deal.

I had a good year with my whites. I have kept 4 pullets and one cockerel plus a cuckoo cockerel(not sure if I will keep him or not at this point). As you all know I got my start from a local fellow that use to show and sold all his birds to show people. His name was Alan and he lived close to me. His neighbor is a person I had sold English Show Budgies back in the 1970's and I see him every time I sell at the flea market. Alan is also suppose to visit the flea market but I have never noticed him there. I was told Alan had sold all his whites and buffs since they were the only color he had when I was at his house. His whites were suppose to be from Cecil's stock over 20 years ago. I am very happy with them but I never sell this stock since I had obtained them several years ago. Did give a few people some hatching eggs over the years though. Can't remember who said it. Did you say Alan Ameril had Black Orps?

lildinkem, When I was at his father's house there were no blacks and his father only offered me whites and buffs but never mention having blacks. Had I been interested in the buffs I would have gotten some because he kept saying his buffs were even better than his beautiful whites. He did have some very nice black langsham bantams and when I was there a person I knew that showed came for several plus I believe he said the someone well known ( a show person) use to pick up birds but don;t quote me on that.

Harry, Your the only one who I know actually knows Allan. And I am certain I read someone saying they had Allan's BLACK Orp line. They must have been mistaken.

I was never at Alan, I just talked to him on the phone. He told me he only had buffs. His mother did the white orps, they got them from Cecil years ago. She also had black langhans. That guy the got the buffs had got langhans from her 2 or 3 years before and was getting along with them.

I talked to Alan several times on the phone, he live is PA. So, I never met him in person. Part of my white Orpington line is from him. He said he had whites and buffs in Orpingtons.

Bill, you have a nice start on whites. Question, how big is your pens, how tall and do they have a metal or tin roof or top. What do you do about winter, put plywood or tin on sides. I need to make some pens and I like yours but didn't know about winter and the cold wind.

I need to make some pens and I like yours but didn't know about winter and the cold wind. Don I use visqueen around the sides and across the top. The winter for my birds is no problem. I give them a garbage can on it's side with some straw so they can stay out of the wind. I give a little pitch to the top so the visqueen allows the water to run off. I seem to loose birds only to the summer heat and never have issues with the winter. Now ofcourse my males who's combs I want to protect will go into my pole barn for a few months where I can use my woodburnin stove to try and keep the temps around freezing. That seems to do okay for most of my males

I like to run 3 hens/pullets/ to one cock in each pen. It will take twelve 2x4's. Cuttin two 2'4's in half to make the side posts 4 feet tall. Then just make two 8'x8' squares and screw them onto the posts. I use the 4 foot high livestock fencing you can buy for $65 for a 100 foot role. just rap it around and use the electric staples to hammer the fencing in place. Two hinges and a small door again with livestock fencing nailed to the door frame. I am short and gettin shorter by the minute. So 4 foot high works well for me. My smallest size birds I put out in them are around two and half month oles and in that version I use chicken wire instead of the livestock fencing. Just sold 7 young ones which I am not going to need to a lady right down the street and I think she may join our club. Hope she does. Lots to learn and this is a great place to do it.
