Harry I understand. I thought about getting a new puter since this one is nearly 5 yr old and has slowed considerably but i just needed something else worse. I have some awesome black cockerels about 8 months old I want to sell but not ship. I want to go to Lake City but I have to have a small surgical procedure the same week that it is that weekend and so I don't know if I will feel like a five hr drive. If I don't I will take them to the Newnan Ga show for any of you that need to add a bit of type to your Lav Projects
I think I have four.

Julie, Your blacks would give not even the Lavenders a boost but they will also boost the black, blues or whites. Any member on here that lives within driving distance should really consider this upgrade that is being offered. Julie, Tubby III who is split lavender is even larger than Tubby Jr was and is even worthy of just being in my black line. He is real large and wide as he is long. Just a super bird and worthy of being shown but once I trim the show aspects are over and he will be breeding for me. He is so nice I would not ever take him off the property. I also have his brother as a spare who is real nice also. When I show in the future I will only take birds I can afford to loose never the very best because they are irreplaceable. Too many situations to worry about taking them to a show. Julie thank you again for giving me a jump start in some very nice and large birds. Harry OK, enough talking I will retreat back into my cave now.

Harry you are right on, I saw her birds at the Ohio National when we had the Orp National there. We have so many of the US bred birds that are bred so tight. I'm not one that thanks you will go hell for crossing UK birds in our birds here. If you are a good breeder I would think it wouldn't take to long to get the picture. In buffs we do have alot more different line to play with.

HenThymes I would like to meet you too. I need to look it up and see exactly what the dates are. Do you know? Are you going to show any? I need to show something. I just hate to wash these big birds. I think I just washed their feet and butts last time. I had washeda few for the Lake City show and then said I think just the feet on the rest. I'm bad.

thanks. were you there last year? It took forever for them to judge the tent the Orps and other English were in. They had a gaurd on the door of the tent and wouldn't let anyone in either and it was really hot in their for the birds too. They had a really big turn out for several different breeds. I think the Marans had a tent all to theirselves and they were trying to get a new color into the standard. They had the most cornish bantams I have seen at any show. It was a good show.

I had a question about breeding lavs, I heard from a couple breeders that breeding blues to lavs to get splits is better then breeding blacks to lavs. I was wondering why this was?

I am working on Lav orps also. Slow process. I was able to get a 100% english lav roo recently so hoping he will add some size. Have used Julie's and Joy's birds to imrprove my birds the last few years. Will try to post a few pics this Spring of my "progress".

regarding breeding to blues.. I thought we could only breed to blacks.. If breeding to blues doesn't mix up the genes too much to unravel, I would sure like to know about this. Anybody know??

From what I understand, breeding with blues is just like breeding with blacks, only exception is that you get blue offspring.

nwchicklady, I used a blue hen because blacks were not available at the beginning. I did get a nice black hen also from Superior Hatchery(this was a hatchery that bought the best quality birds available not like the hatcheries you see advertised all over the place which generally have poor quality birds). Blue is not recommended because inexperienced breeders get confused with the results from such a breeding. That is the only reason that blacks are recommended to be used. A lavender hen that is also carrying one blue gene is visiably distinquished from a regular lavender hen by the feather quills color. The male blue/lavender is very easy to distinquish visually by the color pattern.

Does anyone have pictures of what Harry has mentioned where you can see the difference in those that have been crossed with blues, would love to see it in person just to kind of store in memory.
