You might want to try a cockerel on your girls. My two Black cocks have no interest in this weather. I must have 5 cockerels all showing interest and making attempts. Still, I too only had 2 eggs outta 30 or so fertile. AI might be the way to go to make sure for me.

Bill they are all cockerels. I think they just haven't got the hang of it yet. I did candle second round and 4 good. I set 30 more eggs. I bet the number steadily increases. I am not AI ing. I will just wait.

I have a few who haven't a clue. Like my White cockerel. I have never AI'd before, but can see a reason to do so IF he does not should any improvement in his desire to breed. Something I did notice which MAY help for my future in who to raise where. The first wave of Black juvies I put into a grow out pen with a frisky and ever proving himself KORgo, a Black Orp cock and his sis. Routinely KORgo would show all, how he does it. The entire summer I never took an egg from that pen that was unfertile. Now, interestingly the juvie cockerels who I kept from the first wave had the opportunity to watch and learn. And seemingly these two cockerels are doing their job. Now the other juvies I have grown out in the same pen, minus KORgo's training lessons, seem to be very much like dumb young boys. So, from now on I plan to have one good working on the job cock in each of my juvie pens.

I wish I had some eggs to see if they was any good. I'm getting eggs now, now over blessed. I hope to set some end of week. When I had my std birds back ago, I always used a young male early. Those older guys just don't came around early. If I had a young male that was not interested, I would pen him by his self and put females in next pen. Then put him in after a few days. Just watch him when you put him in and see what is going on. My big buffs are still not laying very good. I have 4 hens in the pen and I get a egg every day or two. Not good if you want early babies. I hand feed so they won't be to fat.

My young ones aren't hitting the mark 100% either. So, I moved in the big boys to get me going. These young pullets are fertile from my #2 Cock KORgo Feran just got moved in with these 2 girls who are also laying, shouldn't be long till their good with fertile eggs This is Feran's traditional pose, always too busy to stop and pose for a pic. As long he fertilizes these girls I don't care Another younger male just gotta name Gorilla Monsoon. I alwys liked that name

WEll, at least you folks are getting some eggs. My blacks are not laying yet but the buffs are. Eggs to hatch Monday and I hope the hatch is good. The really cold weather and rain then warm and then really cold again has messed up these birds and me too.

Don't feel to bad Roy. My girls are holding out as well. I have a pullet pen laying well and some lavender splits but that is about it.

Trying again! I had 8 eggs in the incubator, but after candling twice and seeing nothing happening, they got tossed out. Last night and today, I put another 8 in, and hope for better results.
My flock of 9 month old BBS orps is a whopping 5 birds! Four are blue and one hen is black. The black hen is sitting on a nest, but her sisters added their eggs over the course of a few days, so I am not very hopeful of a decent hatch there. I gave excess roosters to someone who has black orps and she said she would give me some hatching eggs in return. Chickens are fun!
