We are planning to go. Sent entries last week. Will not have Orpingtons as we don't have showable ones at this time.

I am wondering about putting wing bands (clips) on chicks. I was think of the kind that are metal and stay on the bird it's whole life. Can they be put on older chicks? What disadvantages other than not being able to see number without catching the chicken? I want to be able to keep track of certain breedings. We have tried zip ties with some success, but have allowed ties to get too tight on chicks and chicks have lost ties. We really don't have the space to keep chicks physically separate until leg bands stayed on. Other suggestions? Thanks.

We have 2 1/2 month old black Orpington chicks with light pink to whitish earlobes. The white is not the bright white like leghorns, but a dull/flat white. Can we expect this to improve with age? The rooster has bright red earlobes, but the hen has some white on earlobes. We do have a couple of chicks with red earlobes from the mating. Thanks.

I have a bantam hen that has really bad egg shells. We provide calcium (oyster shells) free choice and a layer crumble. Is there anything else that I could try that might improve her shells? She is, of course the best Wynadotte hen that we have. The shells are rough not smooth.
Thank you for any suggestions that might help.

How many hens/pullets do you recommend per cock? I have read 2 to 12. Have you notice a difference in quality of chicks if you hatch pullet eggs as opposed to hen eggs?
Thanks!

What would you do if you saw a chicken cooped in that looked sick? Would you put your chicken in a pen near to it? Do you see sick chickens at shows often?

Have you ever had a bird taken from a show? I noticed at Crossroads, that most cages were open, but some had zip ties on them. Of course, a zip tie wuold not really stop anyone who was determined to take a bird from the cage.

We were talking today about showing and had several questions/concerns about showing. One area was preparing for the show and safety? We all know that there is the possibility that diseases could be spread at shows, so do you do anything special to help keep your chickens from getting something from other birds at the show? Before the show? Cooping in? During the show? Cooping out? When you get back home?
Also, what kiind of things do you look for in your own chickens to make sure that you don't take a chicken that might have something?

Thanks for the replies. We only have one buff hen, her legs are white, slightly pinish looking. We were looking at chicks at the Farm and Home Supply store. All of the "Buff Orpingtons" have bright yellow legs and feet. Actually, I did not look at all of them, but several. I don't remember what color our hen's legs were when we got her.
We are waiting for some white orpington eggs to hatch. We are hoping that the trip here didn't cause any problems and the incubator settings were the right ones! Thanks!

We have a question about legs and feet of newly hatched orpingtons--What color will should they be? I would think that the blacks would be black, but what about the white and the buff--will they be yellow at hatch or will they be pink/white? All of the buffs at the farm and home have bright yellow legs and feet. Thanks!

Thanks for the newsletter. K read the whole thing in one sitting. He is thinking of writing a short story about his only orpington, a little buff hen that he picked out at the Farm and Home a couple of years ago.

:)Hello all,
We are still looking for for some Orpingtons. K really wanted large fowl whites. However, after several requests, we did not find any. So, he is interested in getting blues, blacks, or splashes. The only orpington he has is a little hatchery buff.
The ideal solution for him would be some started chicks hatched after January 1. We are planning to go to several shows this spring, so maybe some one will have a start for him.
We will probably attend the show in Sedalia Mo in April. We are considering the Cornhusker show in Nebraska in April or the show in Michigan. We are planning to attend the show in Peoria IL on May 5. Please let us know if you have chicks or eggs or even older chickens to help him get started.
We live in central Illinois, but are willing to travel some to pick up.
