Gayle I appreciate your help. I am knew to chicken genetics and terminology. Please clear up duck wing/crow wing for me. Crow wing is when the primaries are black and duck wing is when the primaries match the hackle and saddle feathers, am I close....? LOL.
What advice would you give on this project? I want to eventually put birchen on black, chocolate and maybe blue. And the pics of Keith's Orps of UK is exactly what I am going for. It was his pic of a chocolate birchen bantam that drew my interest. I plan to initially put Bill's cockerel on some black and blue hens in the spring (they are too young yet). Then take some pullets back to there father and do some sibling mating. Hoping to set the pattern. Any suggestions?

Gayle that is a great hen. Was that from a UK site; I think I remember seeing it during my search. Thanks for looking. Will is selling his cockerel to me and he should be here next week. So in the spring when my pullets are ready I should have my F1s. Do you have any opinions or advice on the birchen project? If you can find someone who has a true Er birchen flock of chickens, you can borrow the genetics. and apply them to the orpington and then develop the type. So Gayle you don't think Bill's cockerel is "true" birchen? I am new to chicken genetics so can you expand on your thoughts please?

That is just what I am looking for Bill. Sent you a message. And if you have brown/red than the lemon blues are possible (I think) but one project at a time. At least until I have more room.... LOL
Gayle do you know of any other birchens?

Has anyone or is anyone working on either of these colors in LF Orps here in the states? I saw some birchen from one of the UK websites and would love to work on them in maybe black and chocolate.

Okay Don (I think??), I use both products but not at the same time. You can use the simple Tamed Iodine at one teaspoon per gallon of water one day a week (adjust amount as needed; ie 1/2 teaspoon for 1/2 gallon). During the breeding season (for my pigeons mid Dec. - June) I use the Lugols. It is an iodine based product but has added ingredients. I get it from a pigeon supply house, Global Pigeon Supply. I think it is GA.
If you need more info let me know.

I have used liquid iodine in the water once a week for the 35 years I have been breeding pigeons and I feel it was very helpful with fertility and especially the hatching process. When ever someone had trouble with chicks hatching, my first suggestion was always iodine and it was usually the solution.
That said I am new to chicken breeding but can't imagine much difference. I have been using it on the chicks I have for the whole 6 weeks I have had them so far.
I do like to use both a product called Lugol's and the regular tamed iodine (do not use tincture of iodine).

New to breeding Orps. I have LF Black/Blue/Splash lines from some local breeders. I hope to start showing as soon as I get a grasp for what I am doing. I live in Washington Cnty between Boonsboro and Sharpsburg. I plan to be at the MD Poultry Show at the Frederick Fair Grounds on Nov. 2nd and 3rd and hope to meet some Orp breeders there.

Thanks for the reply Harrys. I am actually interested in blacks, blues and splashes. Would eventually like to add another color or two - maybe chocolates and lavenders. What I have gathered from reading here so far, it seems best to keep a straight line of blacks to concentrate the melanisers. So I am assuming it is okay to use the blacks to improve the blues, but not to put the blues back in to the black line.
Right now I have 24 chicks from to two local breeders with not much knowledge about there background; though the breeder of six of them said they were from Korfus lines. I figured to find my way with these guys and then hopefully purchase some top notch stock after I have a better idea of what I am looking at.
Is there a place to look at the exhibitors list? How do I find the top breeders of particular colors?
Where can I find the APA Standard for Orpingtons? Do I have to buy the whole book? Where can I find the English Standard?
What breeding stock should I purchase - English or APA?

I am a newbie to chicken breeding and sorry to throw all these questions in one thread. Feel free to make separate threads.
Question #1.) I have black and blue chicks from black to blue matings. Is the color/markings of the chicks any indication of future color quality - ie with the blacks, some are "penguin" marked and some are more solid black? Is this an indication of the quality of the black color? Is the lacing on the blues obvious on the feathering at an early age or is it something that will develop with the molt?
Question #2.) How close are the Orps bred? I breed racing pigeons (check out my website - TurnedLuck.com) and do quite a bit of inbreeding/line breeding - is this the acceptable practice in chickens? I keep reading about keeping lines closed and breeding daughters and/or granddaughters back to their sires - how tight do most of you breed?
Question #3.) Are there male and female lines? Is this the case with certain colors and/or certain lines?
Question #4.) Is it best to maintain a straight black line (no blue) and a separate line to produce blues and splashes?
Question #5.) What suggestions do you have for some good genetic reading material?
Thanks for your time and you may also contact me by email - joegrimes@myactv.net. I am real serious about breeding an exhibiting Orps, but want to get started with the proper information.
