Has anyone or is anyone working on either of these colors in LF Orps here in the states? I saw some birchen from one of the UK websites and would love to work on them in maybe black and chocolate.

I have made Brown/Red, Silver Birchen & Lemon Blues. My best colored Lemon Blue had lousy type and was culled. My best Brown/Red is a cock I call Harold. I have posted him occasion. I seem to get a Silver Birchen each season too out of about 40ish Black to Black mating. I have a Silver Birchen cockerel growing out rite now. He has very nice type except he is on the smaller side. Not going to use him. most likely will get rid of him one way or another. The green sheen on him is exceptional. I hatched out one Brown/Red pullet this season. She is very nice, and will make a few of them by taking her back to Harold the Brown/Red cock.

Joe here is a pic of him taken on 11/25/13 Like I said he is a late in the season hatch. Could be bigger. I know that size is inherent. So, you should be able to breed them bigger. He needs to finish up. He will add more Silver in the wings eventually. Or at least the line I have where I made them in the past that is what seems to happen. Same with my Brown/Red. My Harold is now in molt. He starts out looking almost all Black. Give Harold 2 more months and he will be looking like the Harold of pics I posted in the past. Here is the Birchen boy. Somewhere around 5 to 6 months old.

That is just what I am looking for Bill. Sent you a message. And if you have brown/red than the lemon blues are possible (I think) but one project at a time. At least until I have more room.... LOL
Gayle do you know of any other birchens?

So far I haven't run in to anyone in the US that have a flock of Birchen Orpingtons. I found this picture of a beautiful Silver Birchen hen. Very stunning.

I will be hanging onto this one and take her to my Cuckoo cock for the start of next year. That Cuckoo will get a lot of work after seeing what he made this last season.

Joe my fav Brown/Red is Frank. This pic is on feathersite.com. I shown him shortly after taking this pic at Crossroads. Matt Lahmon is a Brown/Red guru and I asked him that season at our Central Indiana Poultry Show what he thought, and Matt really liked Frank. I brought him up on Matt's site on a thread and Matt said yes he very much remembered this boy. That season not only Frank was my best Brown/Red he was my best cockerel of all my varieties I made. This was Frank (he died late that season).

Gayle that is a great hen. Was that from a UK site; I think I remember seeing it during my search. Thanks for looking.
Will is selling his cockerel to me and he should be here next week. So in the spring when my pullets are ready I should have my F1s.
Do you have any opinions or advice on the birchen project?

If you can find someone who has a true Er birchen flock of chickens, you can borrow the genetics. and apply them to the orpington and then develop the type.

It appears to be a birchen, it has the dark legs and the crow wings. It appears to be an Er type. It does not have duckwings which is a good sign. I'm just wondering where he got his genetics from??? Birchen orpingtons are not common in the US. Now it seem like birchen marans and cochins are common in the US.
