The freakin country of Pennsylvania!
Why do I believe all of the USA's "IMPORTED" Lemon Cuckoos are from PA? Last year Harry Shaffer gave me one of his White Orpington cocks to make some White Orps. I took him to a Fuesting Buff Sport and a Patterson single comb White Wyandotte. The oldest son of Harry's cock I let breed to some of his sisters and a pair of my better Buff Orp pullets. The results are in. The White cockerel and the Buff pullets made Lemon Cuckoos. Harry's line is part Ammarell. Alan Whites are known to have Cuckoo in them. That is easily confirmed by both Alan and Harry. Even though the cock is White he has the Cuckoo gene. Alan and Harry both told me that one of Alan's cockerels from his line of Whites was sold at auction in PA to a hatchery that is responsible for, as advertised on EBAY back 4 years ago, "IMPORTED Lavender Orpingtons", they too bought one of Alan's White cockerels. We all remember how satisfied those first few who bought those Ameraucana/Austraorp Lav's as Lav Orps were not very happy with the type or look of those Lavs back then. From my deduction, I believe the same hatchery MAYBE responsible for the current line of "Imported" Lemon Cuckoos. Anyone who has seen what these USA Lemon Cuckoos look like will have a hard time convincing me that the same hands that were at play making Lav Orps are not responsible for the making of these Lemon Cuckoo Orps. At least they did use a hatchery quality Buff Orp and not a totally different breed or chicken to make them.
Here are a few pics to give you who care an idea why I have my beliefs. The first pic is of one White cockerel of the offspring from the same son of Harry's cock taken to one of his White sisters. IF you look and compare the head to the Lemon Cuckoo you will see an identical look to compare with. So, it is confirmed these 2 different Lemon Cuckoo cockerels are from the line of Whites I have crossed with my Akers/Britt line of Buffs.
So, for anyone who lurks and is interested in how to make the Lemon Cuckoos in the USA I think this will help give you an idea of the long hard thinking behind the genetics of the current "IMPORTED" Lemon Cuckoos in the states. .
