I started some Trial hatching on different combinations of Blue. I am still working on it so data is not complete. Some of you who breed blue may be interested or not I have been completely fascinated. Here are pictures of Blues hatched from a Black Cock over Splash hen. I hatched a total of 12. Half were to dark. 4 of the dark ones were cockerels and the other two were pullets. I rehomed them early on and only kept the 6 lighter blues. Three pullets and three cockerels. They are hatced two weeks apart. The first hatched Nove 1 One of the younger ones This picture is of chicks out of a Light blue which was to light Cock over a splash hen. I used this combo because the parents were both veey very large. I expected I would get lots of splash chicks and lighter blue chcks. Well it did not happen that way. I did get about half splash. three were boys and two girls. I did lose a splash girl on a cold nite. I hatched all blue pullets. Seven blue pullets. Out of the seven six are too dark. One is a really good blue color. They all are large and very Fluffy The Blue girls look really good except for being to dark so far. I sent a pair of these to a homeschooler doing 4H and wanting to start showing. i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/KeenerB/100_4645_zpscf88364a.jpg[/IMG You can see the only one with great blue color. I like the way the type is shaping up on all. I am looking forward to seeing how the Splash boys turn out. I can show photos of the parents if anyone is interested. I have Chicks hatched that are still young out of a dark blue cock over splash hens. I hatched so far 2 splash and two blues. I alos ahve a group hattched out of a splash cock over Blue hens. So far I have all blues from that cross. They are five days old and i know one is a cockerl cause he is ddoing his shrill chick crow. throwing his head back and poking his chest out as he does it. Very funny to watch. I will take pic of this group when they feather in.

Im glad you are putting this thread together. Its going to be very educational to see in photos what you will pretty much get by crossing certain variations of blue to splash and what the results will be.
Im for sure paying close attention here as I have a similar breeding program with splash and blues. Right now I have Deann's birds from Just strutin in farms here in Northern California. But Im growing out some %100 English Blues and and I have some BBS from Irene at Renies Peeps, and im alot more excited to have these coming up for my projects.
If you dont mind Id like to post along with you my progresses to get any help or suggestions. I wouldnt mind starting my own thread but would much rather post here with you!

That is fine Michael. Gayle and I talk about this subject because we are not sure you get get a specific color of blue with any of these crosses. I know I am being surprised. I thought sure crossing a Light blue cock over Splash hen would produce lighter colored blues but that is not the case with this pair. I have one really good colored blue pullet and the rest although very typey and well laced are to dark to nearly black. I will take pics tomorrow if I can. It is raining today. I did hatch less splash than blue. I only hatched 12 that I kept. I think a old friend came by one nite and gave him quite a few of this cross.

Julie It appears that regardless what color/shade of blue the blue orpingtons have, it is necessary to use birds that are carrying the Pg, Ml, and Co genes to maintain the good lacing which in turn contributes to exceptional splashing. It appears from what I've seen that good laced birds phenotype make good splash birds phenotype. So if that is the case. Then when developing splash a person would want to use exceptionally laced blues. Just going by pictures, all the pictures of richly splashed birds, have richly laced birds in the flock.

Gayle here is that six week old pullet i was telling you about with the blue section of feathering. Never had this before. Also a blue cockerel out of the Black over splash breeding that is less than six months. He is wide and so far is looking good Just wondering how this genetic will color his offspring.

Those are some good looking birds. The color looks spot on and very good type. Excellent lacing. I've been hatching a few blacks and splashes. Hopefully I can get some blues hatched soon. Have had a couple incubator problems. I bought a cabinet but it doesn't seem to circulate, the top is hot and bottom is cool. I'm calling the manufacturer tomorrow to figure out what the heck is going on.

I'm sorry to hear that. As much as they charge for the cabinet type you expect it to work well. I bought my cabinet bator from Mr. Dicki 4 yrs ago and it has worked well. I had one little problem with the turner last year but is was just some loose screws. I called Mr. dicki and he told me what it was and what to to. Very nice man. I am still hatching. Tryng to work through what I have hatched an just keep the best. Still need to hatch a few more blacks. I am happy with these blues. Hope to be able to show in the fall.I may have to cross that pair again and see if I can get some more just like them. Call me soon.

That blue pullet has really good lacing. I think your black pullet is going to be quite a large girl. Thank you for the compliments. Like I said somewhere else, I have worked hard to get that fluff on them. Only breeding Orpingtons to do it. I am amazed at that color myself. Thinking I may cross that pair again. Of course I had chicks that didn't compare, You just grt diffeerent shades of blue with blues. I gave the rest away. I figured it was no since wasting feed.

Here are some poorly made updated pics of the Fluff butts. Now over six months. Will be 7 months old June1 Now this particular one is two weeks younger. He is still on trial to see how he develops and if he stays. His color is good These were made at dusk so look darker in this pic but this boy is wide front to back and as fluffy as I have ever seen Front view Tail looks like it is going to be gorgeous
