I have a breeding pen with a cuckoo male and 2 choc females. I hatched my first 2 chicks out of that pen. They look black!! What should they look like, I'm think choc cuckoo.

Don, The males will either be black like a normal black chick or cuckoo a black chick with a white spot on the top of its head. The males will be split chocolate. You will not get any visual chocolate birds from this mating. The females will just be plain black or cuckoo no chocolates.
Now if you cuckoo male is split chocolate then you will get chocolates and chocolate cuckoos both sexes besides the ones above.

So I need to keep one of these split guys to breed back over the choc females. Which would be best black or cuckoo? I sure don't need to raise many of these.

Don, I would keep a cuckoo split chocolate male so you will get the most diversity in colors.

Don, Don;t know if it is possible but you may want to consider maybe a chocolate partridge since you have the birds available to do such.
