I hear you on that. I was just debating her future this evening watching them. If I did keep her it would be just because she is pretty. She would need a matching friend though and you know where that leads.

I think Harry would be the one to ask about the lavender. I don't have any but do have the one lavender split. I think I would like them but just can't see adding another color. I think I will be doing great is I can do any thing with the ones I have. That means your blacks are split lavender. You really don't need to buy another bird just breed it back to one of your blacks and if he is split you will get more lavenders. Good luck.

Harry- I only have the one pullet that is split my others are not. I bought her but I didn't buy any split cockerels. She will probably just go in the laying flock. I don't know what would happen or if it would mess up my bbs if I hatched any chicks from her and the ones that are not split. Would it cause any harm on down the bbs line? thanks

I know nothing of genetics. I do know that if I do anything with my split birds they will be kept separated from my black breeders so I will know for future breedings which birds have the split gene. Did I say that right? I don't like surprises and the lavenders popping out of black eggs was a bit too surprising.

chicksooner-
So this means all yours are split or just some of them? I would think (and could be wrong) that if you hatched a lavender from a black pen then at least 2 had to be split? I do not know genetics either but thought in order to get lavender either both had to be lavender, a lavender plus a split but don't know if you can get a lavender from 2 blacks if only one is split?
I am like you I will probably put her in the laying pen & not hatch from her or find her a home.

I have a quad of questionable black orps from one breeder. My young blacks are from Harry S. They are so amazing and are making my questionable blacks look rather frumpy. I say questionable because I think they may be Australorps but the breeder reassured me they were orps. I am thinking I am going to get rid of the whole quad and just start over with Harry's.

chickensooner, Just be patient and wait till you see how they mature before dumping your other old birds. You may get a lavender from my birds pop out so keep the pullet you have now also. Maybe Don will help you to make the proper decision about what to keep.

Thanks Harry. I think they look as good as they are going to get. They are a year old next month. I would love to have Don come over and show me what is good and what's not. I think I am emailing him every day at least.

chickensooner,
I was at a show about 3 or 4 years ago and you could not distinquish what was a orpington or australorp. There were orpingtons entered that looked like australorps and there were australorps that looked like orpingtons. It appears they are being crossed without much thought in the process. If you look at Doug's Australorps you will see what one should look like that has the quality and meets the SOP's of an Australorp.

Hi Harry, It's been a while since I asked you last about Lavenders. I've been up and down and all around buying, selling, culling, breeding, etc. Some I purchased from "The home of the Lavender Orpington" I gave all away. lol Here are a few pictures of my Lavenders. I've been working with them for about three years now. I started with a Ramsley Lavender rooster and bred him to six of my Korfus black hens. Could you take a look and give me an idea of what I'm doing wrong/right? I've added those pictures that are small enough. If you would like I can email you some others. Thanks, Debi Attachments:

9 day old Lavs. Notice the 1st one has much slower feathering, and feet are turning quicker? So now someone tell me he is the BOY!! LOL With 24 hours to 1st hatch, I came home from 12 hour shift to find power out and cold eggs. Out of 40+ eggs we had 5 hatch....
